Who you are: You love being outdoors, enjoying wildlife, and the forest in general. Your personal hobbies might include backpacking, fishing, hunting, or other outdoor activities. You as a person and a professional are eager, have a positive attitude, strong work ethic, aptitude to learn new skills, and like working as a team.
What the job is: This is a unique full-time position working in two different disciplines: Wildlife Biology and Forestry Operations. From February to August, you will work with the wildlife team. When working in wildlife, your focus is conducting field surveys for raptors such as bald eagles, osprey, peregrine falcons, and spotted owls. This is required by the California Forest Practice Rules for timber harvest planning and operations. We do demographic studies that are required by Green Diamond's Habitat Conservation Plan (HCP). We do nighttime surveys for spotted owls.
From September to January, you will switch gears and work with the Forest Operations team. For this team you will be conducting road assessment and maintenance monitoring in conjunction with the Aquatic Habitat Conservation Plan (AHCP) and programmatic road permits. You will assist with data collection, data entry, and preparation on projects in each discipline.
For this role you should have a bachelor's degree in wildlife, forest management, natural resources or closely related fields of study in either or both disciplines or the equivalent work experience. This position works primarily in the field using four-wheel drive vehicles and hiking to get the work done. You should be effective at using GPS, maps, and situational awareness to navigate challenging terrain and weather conditions. Safety is always the number one priority for our employees.
Work schedule: A typical day is working 8 to 10 hours depending on where the work is located on the property. The crew meets to discuss the plans on a regular basis in each group. Although you always have co-workers nearby, some tasks in both groups require working alone and taking responsibility for your own safety.
Where you'll work: You will work on nearly 400,0000 acres of Green Diamond's privately held forest property, located in Humboldt and Del Norte Counties along the Northern California coast. Our offices are nestled in the redwood forest near the Pacific Ocean.
Compensation:
Hourly wage range with progression levels: $23.00 to $30.20. The pay range listed is just one part of Green Diamond's total compensation package. Other rewards include eligibility to receive an annual company-wide financial bonus and the opportunity to receive a bonus based on your personal performance.
In addition, Green Diamond offers a generous benefit package to include medical/vision and dental, life and disability insurance, 401(k) plan with match and profit sharing. Paid time off includes 9 designated and up to 2 personal holidays, 10 vacation days, 10 sick days, 30 days parental leave, 3 days bereavement, an extra 2 days bereavement unpaid, jury duty, 1 volunteer day, and 5 days family care. Also provided is a company vehicle for business use. More information about benefits can be viewed on our website: www.greendiamond.com/people/career-opportunities
