Job description

Millbrook School seeks a World Language Department Chair beginning in the 2026-27 academic year. Department chairs primarily:

  • generate and garner support around a department-specific vision for the future of language education at Millbrook within the context of Millbrook's mission
  • build and foster a collaborative atmosphere in which formal and informal discussions of best practices are frequent
  • support the development of teachers through goal setting, observations, feedback, and our evaluation process

Additional tasks include supporting the hiring process, determining teaching assignments, representing the department internally and externally, and performing other administrative duties.

The World Language program promotes student language proficiency through a curriculum that emphasizes authentic language starting at the novice level. Millbrook is eager for a leader who will embrace its strengths and further its development. Interest in proficiency-driven pedagogy through ACTFL standards, integrated performance assessments, and continued professional growth is essential. We seek educators who value creating inclusive classrooms and curriculum. Prior teaching experience is required. Department Chairs teach 3 sections in addition to the duties outlined above. This position includes coaching or supervising an afternoon program for two out of three seasons (or the equivalent). Full-time faculty members are also expected to participate in community service, evening responsibilities, activities, assemblies, and attend required meetings and workshops. The primary goal of a teaching faculty member is to ensure that each student reaches their full potential. Housing may be provided and would entail residential life duties.

The annual salary range for this teaching position is $41,000-$90,000. When determining placement within the salary range, Millbrook School considers total teaching experience, the number of years worked at Millbrook School, and other factors permitted by law.

Responsibilities and Expectations

  • Serve as a communication liaison between faculty and administration
  • Serve as a leader in curriculum and pedagogy in the World Language Department
  • Supporting hiring, determining teaching assignments, representing the department internally and externally, and performing other administrative tasks
  • Build and foster a collaborative atmosphere in which formal and informal discussions of best practices are frequent
  • Support the development of teachers through goal setting, observations, feedback and our evaluation process
  • Support a culture of healthy and open discussion about school issues, while also showing active support for the school's decisions
  • Lead annual (or more frequent) reviews of the curriculum in the department to ensure vertical continuity and appropriateness of content, skills, and assessment.

Other Responsibilities

  • Department Chairs teach 3 sections in addition to the duties outlined above
  • Coaching or supervising an afternoon program for two out of three seasons
  • Serve as an advisor for up to six students, and live in a dormitory and/or participate in the residential life program

Education and Qualification Requirements:

  • Bachelors degree required.
  • Native speaker or proficiency in spoken and written Spanish or French, and fluency with modern language instructional pedagogy
  • Prior teaching experience required; prior coaching and residential life experience preferred.
  • Strong computer skills with the ability to learn new systems quickly, including experience with MS Office and Google
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Energy for adolescents, adaptability, humor, patience and integrity

  • Must be able to read, write, speak, and understand the English language.
  • Must possess the ability to make independent decisions when circumstances warrant such action.
  • Must have the ability to work harmoniously and effectively with others.
  • Must be able to follow written and oral instructions.
  • Must be flexible and willing to adapt to new technology, teaching methods and/or schedules.
  • Must have patience, tact, and a cheerful disposition when dealing with personnel, students, & family members.
  • Must be proficient in composition of written communication.

Physical & Sensory Requirements (with or without the aide of a medical device)

  • Must be able to move intermittently throughout the workday.
  • Must be able to speak and write the English language in an understandable manner.
  • Must be able to cope with the mental and emotional stress of the position.
  • Must possess sight/hearing senses or use prosthetics that will enable these senses to function adequately so that the requirements of this position can be fully met.
  • Ability to work in person, on campus.
  • Must function independently.
  • Must be able to lift, push, pull, and move equipment, supplies, etc., without restrictions.

Working Conditions

  • Typical office and classroom conditions.
  • Involved in residential life in dining hall, chapel and dorms.
  • Outdoor weather and/or indoor conditions while coaching.
  • Bursts of heavy student traffic, congestion, and teenage exuberance throughout the day.

Salary

In compliance with the NYS Salary Transparency Law, the salary range for this position is $41,000-$91,000. When determining placement in the salary range, Millbrook School considers factors including, but not limited to, work experience including the number of years of classroom teaching, number of years working at a boarding school, education, training, skills including coaching experience, & other factors permitted by law.

Housing

Housing is provided for this position. Each faculty member for whom the school provides housing will have an evening responsibility or its equivalent.
