Responsibilities

The Lab Assistant-CPT properly identifies patients, performs phlebotomy as needed, and performs specimen processing within the laboratory while maintaining proper patient identification throughout the process. Assists the laboratory team by performing various maintenance and clerical duties, and other assigned tasks and maintains the lab environment in a safe manner as required by regulatory agencies.

In this role you will also, have the following accountabilities:

  • Performs venipuncture to collect blood specimens, and may perform skin puncture according to physician orders. By Utilizes appropriate techniques during specimen collection and transport to maintain specimen integrity.
  • Follows applicable regulations, and policies and procedures, for specimen collection and labeling, ensuring a complete and accurate specimen for testing. 
  • Receives and processes all specimens in a timely manner according to priority according to regulatory and department protocols. Performs data entry of test requests, test information and patient information into the computer in an accurate and timely manner. 
  • Assists Clinical Lab Scientist (CLS) as requested, loads specimens on analyzers, prepares gram stain for positive blood cultures as required under the direction of a CLS or Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT). 
  • Performs a wide variety of clerical support functions, resolving problems with lab orders and faxing of reports as needed. Ensures paperwork is completed thoroughly with attention to detail. 
  • Maintains laboratory environment as required by regulatory agencies. Adheres to all safety procedures and uses proper protocol for handling specimens in accordance with infection control policies and procedures. 
  • Performs miscellaneous job related duties as assigned.
Qualifications

Education Background Required:

  • High School Diploma/GED

Education Background Preferred:

  • AA degree or 24 college units in laboratory science courses.
  • Typing and Computer skills in a Windows environment preferred.

Licensure, Registration, Certification

  • State of California Certified Phlebotomy Technician I (CPT I) or Phlebotomy Technician II (CPT II).
