Job description

Who is Flock?
Every community deserves to be safe, it's a fundamental right. Our mission is simple - to build technology that reduces crime and protects privacy. Flock partners with cities, businesses, schools, and neighborhoods to help protect where people live, work, and play. Last year, Flock technology supported over 1 million criminal investigations. We've also helped solve approximately 20% of reported crimes in areas where we're deployed, and have played a role in locating more than 10,000 missing people.
We are a high-performance team united by urgency, ownership, and a shared commitment to meaningful impact. The work is fast-paced and the expectations are high. We push beyond perceived limits, support each other, and hold ourselves accountable to delivering results that matter.
With over $1B in funding and an $8.3B valuation, we are scaling with intention and investing in the people who will help us build what others said could not be done. At Flock, you will find the opportunity to grow quickly, take on real responsibility, and contribute to something bigger than yourself.
The Opportunity
We are looking for a Staff Software Engineer to join our Cloud Video team, who are building extremely low-latency live video capabilities to solve crime and make the world a safer place. Not for the faint of heart, overwhelmingly impactful. These cameras bring high-definition, AI-powered video wherever our customers need it. With instant alerts and clear footage, customers are always in the know, making the area safer and smarter.
This engineer will contribute to the development of our cloud-based live and recorded video capabilities, encompassing everything from ingestion, encoding, packaging, and delivery. We are experiencing explosive growth of live video sources with our ever-expanding fleet of Flock LTE-connected cameras, as well as our ability to integrate and access 3rd party cameras to consume video. We're looking for a Staff Engineer excited by the challenge of building live video, ready to roll up their sleeves and make an impact on communities across the nation.
The Skillset
  • Experience with Video/Streaming technologies such as WebRTC, HLS, RTSP, FFmpeg (libav), etc.
  • Experience with Ingestion, encoding, packaging and delivery of live and recorded video
  • Experience integrating with FFmpeg libraries such as libav
  • Experience with Go and Typescript (Node) web services
  • Experience with AWS and cloud tooling such as Kubernetes (EKS), Docker, Prometheus, Grafana
  • Love writing code and have extensive experience doing so
  • Motivated by taking an unknown problem, sinking your teeth in, and coming up with a plan of attack.
  • Experience designing and implementing APIs.
  • Ivs, livekit, and orchestration experience a plus
  • Ability to work cross-functionally with other engineering and product teams

Feeling uneasy that you haven't ticked every box? That's okay; we've felt that way too. Studies have shown women and minorities are less likely to apply unless they meet all qualifications. We encourage you to break the status quo and apply to roles that would make you excited to come to work every day.
90 Days at Flock
We are a results-oriented culture and believe job descriptions are a thing of the past. We prescribe to 90 day plans and believe that good days, lead to good weeks, which lead to good months. This serves as a preview of the 90 day plan you will receive if you were to be hired as a Senior Software Engineer Flock Safety.
The First 30 Days

  • Contribute smaller features and bugfixes with guidance
  • Have all team repos cloned locally and have a good idea of what they do

The First 60 Days
  • Ability to perform in role with minimal or no guidance
  • Contribute to technical planning and architecture discussions
  • Understand design philosophies in use
  • Contribute to metric collection and automated test suites

  • Come up with and speak on ideas for improving our speed, resource usage, API simplicity, and other topics to make our software suite better
