| Aspect | First Year Academic Advisor | Academic Counselor |
|---|---|---|
| Required Credentials | Bachelor's degree; some roles prefer a master's in education or counseling | Bachelor's degree; often a background in counseling or psychology |
| Work Environment | College or university advising offices, focusing on first-year students | Educational institutions, community colleges, or mental health settings |
| Employer & Industry Usage | Higher education institutions, primarily in student services | Educational and mental health organizations, focusing on student well-being |
| Common Search & Comparison Intent | Understanding roles in academic advising for first-year students | Seeking counseling or support services for students |
The main difference is that First Year Academic Advisors focus on guiding new students through their initial college experience, providing academic planning and orientation. Academic Counselors often offer broader support, including mental health and personal development, across various student populations. Both roles require similar educational backgrounds but serve distinct functions within educational institutions.
Undergraduate Academic Advising Center (UAAC) advisors are responsible for thoroughly understanding university policies, procedures, and academic requirements. They serve as liaisons, building strong relationships with faculty, departments, and offices across campus to support a coordinated advising experience. Advisors provide academic guidance to students throughout their entire academic journey, from their first year through graduation, ensuring they stay informed, engaged, and on track to meet their goals.
Responsibilities
General Academic Advising: Meet with undergraduate students individually and occasionally in groups to provide comprehensive academic advising. Support students on a wide range of topics, including course selection, schedule building and degree planning to ensure timely progress toward graduation, exploration of majors, minors, and double majors, selection of electives, engagement in extracurricular opportunities, and referrals to campus support services.
Offer general academic guidance to help students develop and follow a well-rounded, personalized academic plan that aligns with their goals and interests. The aim is to empower students to make informed decisions and fully engage in their college experience.
Accurately document all advising interactions in EAB Navigate and utilize Workday Student to review student records, monitor academic progress, support degree planning, and ensure consistency and continuity in advising services.
Specialized Advising, Outreach, Presentations: Maintain and grow relationships with students in targeted cohorts to increase program satisfaction by addressing advising issues unique to their group (e.g., transfer students, first-year students, student athletes, undeclared majors, etc.). Additionally, meet with all students planning to study abroad to approve their course selections and review how their study abroad plans will impact their overall graduation trajectory.
Conduct class visits and lead cohort-specific advising workshops to deliver targeted academic guidance and share important resources. These sessions help build awareness of requirements, opportunities, and planning strategies tailored to each student group.
Play an active role in New Student Orientation by presenting academic information to students and leading registration sessions using Workday Student to ensure all incoming students leave with a full course schedule tailored to their academic program. Additionally, hold virtual meetings with incoming students prior to Orientation to help them register for classes before arriving on campus.
Participate in numerous outreach campaigns throughout the year to keep students engaged, informed, and on track. These efforts help ensure students receive timely updates, resources, and support tailored to their academic journey.
Assist in several undergraduate student programs or events (such as open house or showcase) for prospective students and families.
Supplemental Advising Activities: Advisors liaise with Academic Departments, Dean's Offices, and other campus offices-both within and outside of the division-to coordinate and support advising efforts across campus, to ensure a consistent and collaborative approach to student success.
Contribute to an environment of teamwork and engagement by representing the UAAC on Student Success Divisional Committees, designed to build and maintain community within the division and to promote our services to the campus community. Adapt to the changing needs of the Division of Student Success and carry out other duties as required.
