Job description

1st Class Shipfitter


Location: Mobile AL
Job Type: Full-Time
Schedule: Day Shift / Night Shift / Overtime Available
Pay: $30 - $37


Position Summary

We are seeking an experienced 1st Class Shipfitter to join our shipyard team supporting new construction, repair, and modernization projects. The ideal candidate will have advanced knowledge of shipfitting techniques, blueprint reading, steel fabrication, and structural installation aboard commercial or naval vessels. Candidates must be able to work independently with minimal supervision while maintaining high quality and safety standards.


Responsibilities

  • Read and interpret shipyard blueprints, structural drawings, and work specifications
  • Lay out, fabricate, assemble, and install structural steel components aboard vessels
  • Fit and align bulkheads, foundations, decks, hull sections, and other ship structures
  • Measure, cut, burn, bevel, and prepare steel using hand tools and power equipment
  • Perform tack welding and work closely with welders to complete final welds
  • Operate grinders, torches, chain falls, come-alongs, and other shipyard equipment safely
  • Conduct fit-up inspections to ensure structural accuracy and compliance with specifications
  • Repair damaged vessel structures and complete modifications as required
  • Work in confined spaces, elevated areas, dry docks, and aboard active vessels
  • Maintain clean work areas and follow all shipyard safety procedures


Qualifications

  • 3+ years of shipfitting experience in a shipyard environment preferred
  • Must qualify as a 1st Class Shipfitter based on shipyard testing standards
  • Strong ability to read and interpret blueprints, drawings, and weld symbols
  • Experience with steel fabrication, structural alignment, and hull construction
  • Proficient with oxy-fuel cutting, grinding, and layout tools
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision
  • Knowledge of shipyard safety procedures and confined space requirements
  • Strong attention to detail and workmanship
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs and work in physically demanding environments


Preferred Certifications

  • OSHA 10 or OSHA 30 Certification
  • Shipyard Competent Person Certification
  • Navy/NAVSEA experience preferred
