Nuclear & Radiological Operations Support Specialist

Company: Sonic Systems International, Inc.

Location: GE Hitachi – Wilmington, NC

Pay: $18.00–$26.00 per hour (based on qualifications and experience)

Employment Type: Variable Hour / As Needed

For more than 30 years, Sonic Systems International has provided skilled professionals to support the commercial nuclear and industrial industries. We are currently seeking dependable individuals to support GE Hitachi's Wilmington operations.

Former nuclear industry professionals—including Radiation Protection (RP) Technicians, Decontamination (Decon) Technicians, Fuel Manufacturing personnel, Nuclear Operations employees, Maintenance personnel, Outage workers, and individuals with previous radiological work experience—are strongly encouraged to apply.

Position Summary

Sonic Systems International is seeking dependable, safety-focused professionals to provide operational support for GE Hitachi's Wilmington facilities. This position supports multiple work locations, including the WFSC, FMO, FCO, and SCO facilities, with assignments based on operational demands and staffing requirements.

Employees will perform a variety of operational support duties in highly regulated industrial environments, including work within Radiologically Controlled Areas (RCAs). Successful candidates must demonstrate flexibility, professionalism, and an unwavering commitment to safety, quality, and procedural compliance.

This is a variable-hour position. Employees may be assigned to any of the supported facilities as operational needs require.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provide operational support at the WFSC, FMO, FCO, and SCO facilities.
  • Perform temporary assignments based on customer staffing requirements and workload demands.
  • Safely perform assigned duties within Radiologically Controlled Areas (RCAs).
  • Comply with all radiological, environmental, health, safety, security, and quality requirements.
  • Follow written procedures, work instructions, and supervisor direction.
  • Assist facility personnel with operational, material handling, housekeeping, and support activities as assigned.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment.
  • Participate in required training, safety meetings, and qualification activities.
  • Demonstrate professionalism while working with GE Hitachi personnel and fellow Sonic Systems employees.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Ability to pass all required background screening and drug testing.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain required site access authorization.
  • Strong attendance record and dependable work history.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and work in a team environment.
  • Basic computer proficiency.
  • Ability to follow written procedures and work instructions.
  • Demonstrated commitment to safe work practices.

Preferred Qualifications

Previous nuclear industry or radiological experience is highly preferred. Qualified applicants with prior nuclear experience will receive strong consideration.

Preference will be given to candidates with experience in one or more of the following:

  • Commercial nuclear power plants
  • Nuclear fuel manufacturing
  • Department of Energy (DOE) facilities
  • Radiologically Controlled Areas (RCAs)
  • Radiation Protection (RP)
  • Decontamination (Decon)
  • Radworker I or Radworker II qualifications
  • Contamination control
  • Radioactive material handling
  • Nuclear maintenance or operations
  • Nuclear outage support
  • Fuel handling or fuel manufacturing
  • Industrial maintenance in highly regulated environments
  • Material handling, warehouse, or logistics experience within nuclear or radiological facilities

Experience supporting organizations such as GE Hitachi, Westinghouse, Framatome, BWXT, EnergySolutions, NAC International, Orano, or other nuclear industry employers is highly desirable.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to stand and walk for extended periods.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to bend, kneel, climb ladders, and perform repetitive tasks.
  • Ability to wear required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), including respiratory protection when required.
  • Ability to work in industrial environments with varying temperatures and conditions.

Employment Status

This is a variable-hour position supporting customer-driven workload requirements. Work availability is dependent upon operational needs at GE Hitachi's Wilmington facilities.

Periods of active work may be followed by periods during which no work is available. During these periods, employees may be placed on temporary layoff status until additional work becomes available.

Employees on temporary layoff status may be recalled to active employment as staffing requirements increase.

Work Schedule

This is a variable-hour position. Work schedules are based on customer demand and operational requirements and are not guaranteed.

Employees may be scheduled for first, second, or third shift assignments, overtime, weekends, and holidays as needed.

Assignments may occur at any of the supported GE Hitachi Wilmington facilities.

Because this position supports fluctuating workloads, there may be periods when work is unavailable. During these periods, employees may be placed on temporary layoff status and recalled when work resumes.

Employees may be scheduled for:

  • First, second, or third shift
  • Overtime as required
  • Weekend work
  • Holiday work
  • Assignments at any of the supported GE Hitachi Wilmington facilities

Compensation

  • $18.00–$26.00 per hour, based on experience.
