Job description

Founded in Silicon Valley in 2009 by Marc Andreessen and Ben Horowitz, Andreessen Horowitz (aka a16z) is a venture capital firm that backs bold entrepreneurs building the future through technology. a16z has $100B+ under management across multiple funds. We've invested in companies like Affirm, Airbnb, Coinbase, Databricks, Figma, GitHub, Instacart, Pinterest, Roblox, Stripe, and Substack.

a16z speedrun is the firm's program to invest in, and help, new startups. We run a 2x/year program that spans 12 weeks, with dozens of startups working out of a16z's offices in SF and LA. So far we've invested in over 150 startups with $180M+ in capital deployed.

The Role

We are looking for an Associate to join our Capital Network team to work across our Consumer, AI Apps & Speedrun verticals. The Capital Network function serves as a trusted advisor that guides & advises our portfolio companies through capital raising (equity and debt), M&A (including strategic investments) and capital markets transactions. The primary function of this role is to provide real and sustained value to: (i) the Firm's Consumer, AI Apps & Speedrun portfolio companies, (ii) the Consumer, AI Apps & Speedrun investment teams, and (iii) the broader Consumer, AI Apps & Speedrun operating teams through cross-functional collaboration.

This role requires an in-office presence 5 days a week in our San Francisco, CA office.

To join our team, you should be excited to:
  • Support theย firm's Consumer, AI Apps & Speedrunย  portfolio companies with transactional work including capital raising and M&A advisory in partnership with your Capital Network partners
  • Perform valuation analyses for investment and M&A execution
  • Assist in the execution of financing & strategic processes and portfolio analysis
  • Develop presentation materials for internal and external audiences for both the Capital Network team and the firm's ย portfolio companies to drive outcomes
  • Conduct primary research for the group or in coordination with other internal a16z operating groups that deliver key insights on industry developments and trends
  • Perform comprehensive, in-depth company and industry research as well as complex portfolio and benchmarking analyses
  • Actively map and maintain relationships with the broader capital ecosystem (VCs, growth equity, debt providers, and strategics)ย 
Minimum Qualifications
  • 2-4 years of corporate finance experience in technology-oriented sectors.ย  Preferable prior experience includes but is not limited to, corporate development roles, investment banking in a technology sector coverage capacity (M&A product role, management consulting, or other finance roles where capital raising and M&A was a strong focus)ย 
  • Solid understanding of the venture ecosystem, including emerging trends and competitive dynamics among the various capital providers
  • Ability to quickly build trust with other team members as well as entrepreneurs and broader capital/strategic network
  • Low ego, high empathy, and the capacity to collaborate effectively with diverse teams
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities, work toward contributing new ideas & solutions, navigate situations with ambiguity, and execute consistently in a dynamic environment
  • Exceptional communication, interpersonal, and presentation skills, with a focus on detail and executive presence
  • Proven ability to multi-task and apply initiative and creativity on projects
  • Bachelor's degree in Finance, Business, Economics, or a technical field preferred but not required

The anticipated salary range for this role is between $184,000 - $214,000, actual starting pay may vary based on a range of factors which can include experience, skills, and scope.

This role is eligible to participate in the a16z carry program and various discretionary bonus programs as well as benefit and perquisite plans including health, dental, vision, disability, life insurance, 401K plan, vacation, and sick leave.
