Position description
Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics
University of California, San Francisco (UCSF)
Faculty Position - Epidemiology Assistant or Associate Professor
The Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics (DEB) at UCSF invites applications for a full-time faculty position in the Adjunct or In Residence series at the Assistant or Associate Professor rank from applicants with expertise in the methods of clinical epidemiology.
Context: UCSF is one of the nation's most prolific biomedical research institutions in terms of research funding and scientific productivity in a wide spectrum of subject matter domains, and the UCSF DEB is the campus's hub for expertise and formal instruction in the methods of epidemiology, biostatistics and health-related data science. The DEB instructs many types of learners, including medical students, clinical residents, clinical fellows, and junior faculty; graduate students in the DEB's Master's Degree Programs (in Clinical and Epidemiologic Research; and Health Data Science) and PhD Program in Epidemiology and Translational Science; and graduate students from other departments. In addition to teaching, the DEB provides a supportive environment for the research of its faculty members in either methods development or applied topics. Collaboration with clinicians in our health system and other researchers outside DEB is common and encouraged (including with the local health department and private healthcare organizations), and there are special opportunities for informatics and learning health systems research.
Duties: Faculty members in the DEB are expected to lead an independent, extramurally-funded research program; participate in formal instruction to professional students and graduate students in the methods of clinical and epidemiologic research; provide project-specific and career mentoring to all levels of trainees; and contribute to departmental and university service.
Qualifications: Candidates must have:
โ€ข a doctorate-level professional degree in medicine, pharmacy, or nursing (or equivalent clinical experience);
โ€ข graduate-level training in epidemiology, public health, informatics or a closely related field;
โ€ข expertise, with a publication record, in the methods of contemporary predictive analytics as applied to clinical decision-making and healthcare delivery; we define this as including development and assessment of diagnostic tests, multi-feature prediction rules (including those derived with machine learning), and how test results and prediction rules can guide clinical decisions (i.e., test utility);
โ€ข strong interest and experience in teaching the methods of predictive analytics in both formal and informal settings, including to audiences without extensive mathematical backgrounds;
โ€ข record of accomplishment in applied research related to predictive analytics; for Associate-level applicants, this includes a history of extramural funding;
โ€ข experience with electronic medical record-based informatics and/or research; and
โ€ข familiarity with the methods of modern causal inference.
Individuals with research interests in any subject matter domain are welcome to apply. The DEB particularly seeks candidates who will contribute to its commitment to excellence and collaboration.
