Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit
The Department of Epidemiology (http://www.sph.unc.edu/epid/) is internationally recognized as a leader in epidemiologic research and training. The Department of Epidemiology is one of the eight departments located in the Gillings School of Global Public Health, the number one ranked public school of Public Health in the US. The achievements of our faculty, staff, students, and alumni contribute to the department's standing among the leading academic departments of epidemiology in the world. The department has approximately 37 Tenured- Tenure Track Faculty, 13 Joint Faculty, 19 Fixed Term Faculty, 129 Adjunct Faculty, 52 staff, and approximately 20 Postdoctoral Fellows and 230 students (150 PhD, 10 MSCR, 70 MPH). The department's operating budget was $35 million in sponsored funding across research, training, and public service activities in 2025.
Position Summary
Up to four full-time tenure-track faculty positions in the rank of Assistant Professor in the Department of Epidemiology. 
Competitive candidates will demonstrate strong capacity for research that impacts public health, advances the field of epidemiology, and contributes to the department's teaching mission. As members of the Department of Epidemiology at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, faculty are expected to develop independently funded research portfolios, contribute impactful scholarly products, mentor master's and doctoral students, and teach core epidemiology methods and/or substantive area courses in epidemiology. 
The department's primary focus is the development and application of research methods to understand the patterns and causes of health and disease, and the application of that knowledge to improving the health of populations. The department provides strong training in research methods and opportunities to apply epidemiology to a wide range of health problems.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
PhD or equivalent degree in Epidemiology or a closely related field prepared to conduct independent research, contribute high-quality teaching, and mentor student training in epidemiology research.
Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
Tenure-track faculty at all levels are expected to demonstrate excellence in teaching, service and scholarship through their scholarly contributions to science, capacity to obtain extramural funding that supports independent research, classroom instruction, and mentoring master's and doctoral students. Future promotion to the rank of Associate Professor will require demonstrating a successful record of scholarship, leadership of funded epidemiologic research (in the role of PI/MPI role on grants or contracts) and a track record for training graduate students (demonstrated through both mentoring and teaching).
