What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a contractual epidemiologist?

To thrive as a Contractual Epidemiologist, you need a solid background in public health, statistical analysis, and disease surveillance, usually supported by a degree in epidemiology or a related field. Familiarity with statistical software like SAS, R, or SPSS, as well as experience with data management systems, is typically required. Strong analytical thinking, attention to detail, and clear communication skills help you interpret findings and collaborate effectively with public health teams. These competencies are crucial for accurately monitoring health trends, informing interventions, and supporting timely public health responses.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals in a contractual epidemiology role, and how can they be addressed?

Professionals in contractual epidemiology roles often encounter challenges such as adapting quickly to new project teams and datasets, managing tight deadlines, and ensuring compliance with diverse stakeholder requirements. Since contracts are typically project-based, there may be limited onboarding time, requiring strong self-motivation and adaptability. Effective communication and proactive collaboration with multidisciplinary teams—such as public health officials, data analysts, and clinicians—are key to overcoming these challenges and delivering high-quality epidemiological insights within project timelines.

What is contractual epidemiology?

Contractual epidemiology refers to the practice of hiring epidemiologists on a contract basis, rather than as permanent employees. These professionals are responsible for studying patterns, causes, and effects of health and disease conditions in specific populations, often for a set period or specific project. Contractual epidemiologists may work for government agencies, universities, or private organizations, providing expertise on outbreaks, data analysis, and public health interventions. Their role is essential for supporting targeted research, outbreak investigations, and public health program evaluations. The contractual arrangement allows for flexibility and rapid deployment of specialized skills when and where they are needed most.

NYUGSOM’s Department of Population Health & Division of Epidemiology

The Division of Epidemiology has existing expertise in causal inference methods, real-world data analyses, social epidemiology, population health surveillance, and the epidemiology of substance use, cancer, diabetes, and cardiovascular disease. The mission of the Division is to conduct innovative, rigorous research to discover the causes of and solutions for pressing health problems and health inequities in a changing world; train the next generation of leading scholars and health professionals in state-of-the-art epidemiologic methods; and translate research to impact population health and policy.   What sets this Division apart from others is:

  • Its rigorous focus on consequentialist epidemiology
  • Combining of epidemiologic and artificial intelligence methods for causal inference
  • Close relationships with community and government agency partners
  • Multidisciplinary integration within the nation’s top-funded Department of Population Health and one of the leading health systems in the United States

The incoming Director will lead an existing team of nearly 100 highly productive epidemiology faculty, staff and trainees.  For additional information regarding the Division, please visit: https://med.nyu.edu/departments-institutes/population-health/divisions-sections-centers/epidemiology/

They must be a national leader in the field of epidemiology.
