What is an independent contractor epidemiology?

An Independent Contractor Epidemiologist analyzes public health data, identifies disease patterns, and provides recommendations on a contract basis rather than as a full-time employee. They may work with government agencies, healthcare organizations, or private businesses on specific projects, such as outbreak investigations or policy development. This role offers flexibility but requires self-management, specialized expertise, and often securing contracts independently.

What skills and qualifications are needed for an independent contractor epidemiology?

To thrive as an Independent Contractor Epidemiologist, you need a solid background in epidemiological methods, statistical analysis, and public health, typically supported by an advanced degree in epidemiology or a related field. Familiarity with data analysis software such as SAS, R, or SPSS, and knowledge of data visualization and database management systems are highly valued, along with certifications like CPH (Certified in Public Health). Strong communication, self-management, and attention to detail are important soft skills for liaising with clients and presenting findings. These skills and qualities ensure you can independently deliver high-quality epidemiological insights and adapt to varied project requirements.

What types of projects do independent contractor epidemiologists typically work on?

Independent Contractor Epidemiologists often engage in a wide variety of projects, including disease surveillance studies, outbreak investigations, program evaluations, and data analysis for research or public health organizations. You may be hired to support academic research, assist healthcare agencies with epidemiological modeling, develop public health policies, or consult on regulatory compliance. Projects can range from short-term data review tasks to long-term studies requiring detailed reporting and collaboration with larger multidisciplinary teams. Flexibility and the ability to quickly adapt to new project scopes are key aspects of this independent role. Because you often work remotely or on-site as needed, strong project management and clear communication with clients are essential for success.

Job description

This role is for one of our clients

Compensation: $150-$175 per hour

1. Overview

We are seeking an experienced Epidemiologist to support an expert evaluation project focused on commercial drugs and pharmaceutical development programs.

In this role, you will apply your epidemiological expertise to assess how accurately patient populations are defined and estimated for specific drugs and clinical indications. You will develop and critique evaluation criteria, assess patient-population estimates, and provide rigorous feedback on whether the underlying assumptions, methodology, and data sources reflect sound epidemiological practice.

This opportunity is particularly suited to professionals with hands-on experience working with real-world healthcare data and patient-funnel analysis within pharmaceutical, biotechnology, healthcare, or research environments.

Requirements

2. Key Responsibilities
  • Develop and critique structured evaluation rubrics for analyzing commercial drugs and drug-development programs.
  • Estimate and assess patient populations associated with specific drugs and clinical indications.
  • Analyze patient funnels across stages such as:
    • Disease prevalence and incidence
    • Diagnosed populations
    • Treated populations
    • Eligible populations
    • Addressable patient populations
  • Evaluate whether patient-population estimates are methodologically sound, appropriately sourced, and supported by credible evidence.
  • Identify potential over-counting, under-counting, selection bias, or inappropriate assumptions within population estimates.
  • Review methodologies used to translate epidemiological data into commercially relevant patient populations.
  • Apply consistent epidemiological judgment across a range of drugs and therapeutic indications.
  • Provide clear, evidence-based written feedback explaining the rationale behind conclusions and evaluations.
3. Required Qualifications
  • 5+ years of professional experience in epidemiology or a closely related discipline.
  • Graduate degree in Epidemiology, Biostatistics, Public Health, or a related quantitative health-science field.
  • US-based professional experience.
  • Familiarity with biotechnology and pharmaceutical development programs.
  • Hands-on experience using real-world healthcare data, including:
    • Claims data
    • Electronic health records (EHR)
    • Patient registries
    • Epidemiological databases
    • Other population-level healthcare datasets
  • Demonstrated ability to translate real-world data into patient funnels and population estimates.
  • Strong understanding of prevalence, incidence, diagnosis rates, treatment patterns, and patient eligibility.
  • Excellent analytical and written communication skills.
  • Ability to clearly explain methodological assumptions, data limitations, and the reasoning behind population estimates.
4. Engagement Details
  • Role: Epidemiologist — Patient Population Sizing
  • Work Arrangement: Fully Remote
  • Location: United States
  • Engagement Type: Independent Contractor
  • Pilot Duration: Approximately 10–20 hours over a 1–2 week period
  • Projects may be extended based on project requirements and contributor performance.
  • Strong contributors may have opportunities to participate in future engagements.
5. Why Participate?
  • Apply your epidemiological expertise to emerging AI evaluation and research.
  • Help improve how AI systems analyze pharmaceutical development programs and patient populations.
  • Contribute to building more accurate and rigorous expert evaluation frameworks.
  • Potential for recurring opportunities as the program expands.
