Epic Engineer information

What is an Epic Engineer?

An Epic Engineer is a professional who specializes in implementing, customizing, and maintaining Epic Systems software, which is a widely used electronic health record (EHR) system in healthcare organizations. They work closely with clinicians and IT teams to ensure that the Epic software meets the needs of the hospital or clinic, handling tasks such as workflow optimization, troubleshooting, and system upgrades. Epic Engineers are often certified in specific Epic modules and play a key role in supporting the technological infrastructure that enables efficient patient care.

What engineer makes $500,000 a year?

Senior engineers in specialized fields such as software engineering, data engineering, or systems architecture can earn $500,000 or more annually, especially with extensive experience, advanced skills, and leadership roles. High compensation often includes bonuses, stock options, or profit sharing, particularly in large tech companies or startups with significant growth potential.

How difficult is it to get hired at Epic?

Getting hired as an Epic Engineer can be competitive, often requiring strong technical skills in software development, healthcare IT, or related fields, along with relevant certifications and experience with Epic systems. The hiring process typically involves multiple interviews, technical assessments, and a review of prior work experience. Candidates who demonstrate proficiency in Epic tools and a solid understanding of healthcare workflows tend to have better chances.

How much do engineers at Epic make?

Epic Engineers typically earn a median salary ranging from $80,000 to $130,000 annually, depending on experience, location, and specific role. Senior engineers or those with specialized skills in software development and healthcare systems may earn higher compensation, often supplemented with benefits and bonuses.

What does Epic engineering do?

Epic engineers develop, implement, and maintain software solutions for Epic Systems Corporation, primarily focusing on healthcare information systems. They work with electronic health records (EHR), using programming languages like Java or C#, and often require knowledge of healthcare workflows and certifications. Their role involves customizing and supporting Epic software to improve clinical and administrative processes.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Epic Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Epic Engineer, you need a solid background in healthcare IT, systems analysis, and problem-solving, typically supported by a degree in computer science or a related field and Epic certification. Familiarity with Epic modules, programming languages (such as SQL), and healthcare data integration tools is essential. Strong communication, teamwork, and project management skills help facilitate collaboration between technical teams and clinical staff. These competencies ensure reliable EHR system performance, user satisfaction, and successful implementation in complex healthcare environments.

Common Search & ComparisonYesYes

Epic Engineers focus on developing, customizing, and maintaining Epic software systems through technical expertise. Epic Analysts primarily analyze clinical workflows, gather requirements, and support Epic system implementation. While both roles require Epic certifications and work within healthcare IT, Epic Engineers are more technical, whereas Epic Analysts focus on process and workflow optimization.

What are some common challenges Epic Engineers face when implementing and optimizing electronic health record (EHR) systems?

Epic Engineers often encounter challenges such as managing complex system integrations with existing hospital technologies, ensuring data migration accuracy, and adapting workflows to meet clinician needs. Balancing strict regulatory requirements with user-friendly solutions can also be demanding. Collaboration with IT teams, clinicians, and project managers is crucial to troubleshoot issues and continuously optimize performance for seamless healthcare delivery.

Job description

Are you an experienced, passionate pioneer in technology who wants to work in a collaborative environment? As an experienced Interface Developer / Integration Analyst  you will have the ability to share new ideas and collaborate on projects as a consultant without the extensive demands of travel. If so, consider an opportunity with Deloitte under our Project Delivery Talent Model. Project Delivery Model (PDM) is a talent model that is tailored specifically for long-term, onsite client service delivery.

Work you'll do/Responsibilities

  • Communicate regularly with Engagement Managers (Directors), project team members, and representatives from various functional and / or technical teams, including escalating any matters that require additional attention and consideration from engagement management
  • Design, build, and support Epic Bridges interfaces connecting Epic to third-party systems (labs, radiology, pharmacy, HIEs, devices, revenue cycle partners, public health).
  • Develop and maintain InterSystems Health Connect productions (business services, business processes, business operations) to route, orchestrate, and transform data.
  • Build and troubleshoot common HL7 v2 interface patterns (as applicable): ADT, ORM, ORU, SIU, DFT-including triggers, acknowledgements (ACK), error handling, retries, and reprocessing.
  • Create and maintain data mappings/transformations (e.g., HealthConnect DTL), and implement code-based logic when configuration alone is insufficient.
  • Configure integration connectivity and protocols (as applicable): MLLP/TCP, file/SFTP, web services/APIs; manage certificates/secure transport where required.
  • Perform end-to-end testing (unit/integrated/regression/cutover), validate message content and downstream behavior, and support go-lives.
  • Monitor interface health: queues, message traceability, alerts, dashboards; create and maintain runbooks/SOPs and operational documentation.
  • Lead/participate in incident triage and root-cause analysis (RCA) across upstream/downstream systems; implement fixes and preventive controls.
  • Follow change control and release management practices: environment promotions, documentation, peer review, and coordinated cutovers.
  • Collaborate with Epic application teams, integration platform teams, infrastructure/network/security, and vendors to deliver stable integration outcomes.
  • Ensure alignment with privacy/security/compliance expectations (HIPAA-aware handling, least privilege access, auditability).

  • Experience in delivering and supporting interfaces in production (including on-call or time-sensitive support).
  • Ability to produce clear integration documentation (interface specs, mapping documents, support runbooks).
  • Hands-on experience with Git for version control, deployment orchestration, and code collaboration (e.g., GitHub, GitLab, Bitbucket)
  • Limited immigration sponsorship may be available
  • Ability to travel 10%, on average, based on the work you do and the clients and industries/sectors you serve
  • On-call/support rotation (as needed)
