Job description

PURPOSE: The Habitat Restoration Volunteer (unpaid) at the Phillip and Patricia Frost Museum of Science (Frost Science) will have the opportunity to assist the Conservation Programs team with MUVE Volunteer workdays, outreach, and education. MUVE is a volunteer-based habitat restoration project that uses social media, eco-art, and science exhibits to engage local residents in restoring coastal environments that once thrived in Miami. Volunteers will assist staff with site prep (removal of invasive vegetation) and restoration/community science days.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Assist with facilitating regularly scheduled Volunteer Workdays
  • Engage the public about environmental conservation efforts at outreach events
  • Participate in community science beach cleanups and biodiversity monitoring
  • Remove and monitor invasive plant populations at MUVE's conservation sites.
  • Participate in regular planting, monitoring of plant growth, and maintenance at MUVE's conservation sites.
  • Develop and complete special projects as needed.
  • Perform all assigned tasks.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Background or interest in conservation, botany, ecology, or wildlife biology desired.
  • Interest in science and Frost Sciences mission.
  • Reliable and punctual, with good attendance.
  • Positive attitude, strong interpersonal and organizational skills
  • Ability to work independently or as part of a team.

SCHEDULE REQUIREMENTS:

  • Must be able to commit to a minimum of 1 day per month.
  • Preferably able to commit to at least one Saturday day a month

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS & ENVIRONMENT

  • Work activities include bending, reaching, lifting, and carrying up to 50 pounds of weight.
  • Work is performed outdoors, with potentially some work done indoors.
  • Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.

CLEARANCE REQUIREMENTS:

  • Background clearance
  • Drug screening as part of the Drug-Free Workplace Program.
