Job description

If you are experienced in non-profit accounting and looking for the perfect blend of stable work and flexible hours, this is the job for you!   Shining Star Consulting is seeking an accountant with at least 3 years' experience in nonprofit accounting.  Nonprofit accounting experience is required.   Reporting to a Controller or Director of Finance, responsibilities include AP/AR, journal entries, donor restrictions, accruals, prepaid depreciation, bank and payroll reconciliations, month-end close, and financial reporting/compliance with advanced excel stills.  This is not a temp job.   This a fully remote position, and workdays/times are flexible. Pay rate is $35 - $50/hour, depending on qualifications. 
Summary of Key Responsibilities:

  • Build strong client relationships. Get to know clients and their businesses well. Find and solve problems before they become big issues. 
  • Provide great service. Deliver excellent accounting and operational support to clients.  Communicate clearly and deliver on-time, accurate work. 
  • AP/AR. Manage vendor payments and invoicing, ensure accurate coding and proper approvals.  Maintain records and reconcile with CRM as needed.
  • Banking and Reconciliation.  Reconcile all bank, investment, and credit card accounts. Prepare deposits.  Identify and investigate any irregularities or discrepancies.
  • Contract and Grant Restrictions. Understand and comply with donor restrictions
  • Month-end close. Handle all tasks to close the books each month. This includes cost allocations, revenue recognition, reconciliations, and creating reports that follow nonprofit accounting rules.
  • Prepare financial reports. Help the Client Engagement Lead create reports, support grant accounting, reconciliations, accruals, prepaid deductions and reconcile payroll data. 
  • Process Improvement.  Help identify process improvements, set up and maintain systems and implement automation.

Qualifications:

  • At least 3 years nonprofit accounting experience, demonstrating solid understanding of nonprofit accounting practices and relevant regulations. (such as prepaid expenses, accruals, deferred revenue, restricted/unrestricted revenue), bookkeeping procedures, and accounting regulations.
  • Excellent communication and relationship-building skills, with the ability to explain financial concepts to non-financial stakeholders.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Strong organizational and time-management skills.
  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy in data entry and financial reporting.
  • Experienced with accounting software such as QuickBooks (preferred) or Xero
  • Skilled and adept in Excel or Google Sheets
  • Financial Edge experience or equivalent preferred.
  • Experience working with grants and nonprofit-specific accounting requirements preferred.
  • Experience with payroll processing preferred.
  • Northern California location preferred.
