Heavy Equipment Technician – Student / Recent Graduate
Shop-Based | Entry-Level Opportunity
Are you currently enrolled in a Diesel Equipment Mechanic program, or have recently graduated and ready to get hands-on experience?
American State Equipment is looking for a motivated Heavy Equipment Technician (Student / Recent Graduate) to join our shop team and begin building a long-term career in heavy equipment service and repair.
This is an excellent opportunity to apply your technical training in a real-world shop environment while working alongside experienced technicians and learning on industry-leading equipment.
Position Summary
The Heavy Equipment Technician assists with the inspection, diagnosis, repair, and maintenance of construction equipment in a shop setting. Under the guidance of experienced technicians, this role provides hands-on exposure to mechanical, hydraulic, electrical, and pneumatic systems while developing safe work habits and technical skills.
This position is ideal for individuals pursuing or recently completing a Diesel Technology or Diesel Equipment Mechanic program who are eager to learn, grow, and advance within the field.
Key Responsibilities
  • Assist with inspecting, troubleshooting, and diagnosing construction equipment, including Liebherr, Roadtec, Gomaco, Manitowoc, and Grove machines
  • Perform basic mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, and pneumatic repairs under supervision
  • Complete preventative maintenance services and general equipment upkeep
  • Learn to use diagnostic tools such as laptops, gauges, and testing instruments
  • Assist with disassembly and reassembly of components according to OEM guidelines
  • Operate equipment in a controlled shop environment to verify repairs
  • Perform basic welding or cutting tasks (training provided as needed)
  • Read and interpret service manuals, schematics, and work orders
  • Accurately complete service documentation, timecards, and inspection checklists
  • Communicate effectively with service team members and shop leadership
  • Follow all OSHA and company safety standards at all times
Education amp; Experience
  • High school diploma or GED required
  • Currently enrolled in or recently graduated from a Diesel Equipment Mechanic program
  • Willingness to learn and grow into a full-service technician role
Skills amp; Competencies
  • Strong mechanical aptitude and interest in heavy equipment
  • Basic understanding of diesel engines, hydraulics, and electrical systems
  • Ability to learn diagnostic software and computer-based tools
  • Good written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to read and understand technical manuals and diagrams

  • Attention to detail and commitment to quality workmanship
