Job description

Description
Job Objective:
Under the immediate management of the Central Transport Supervisor or designee, the Patient Transport Attendant provides transportation of patients throughout the hospital, delivery of beds, gurneys and wheelchairs to units, exchange of portable O2 tanks throughout the hospital, and other special tasks to maintain department functions.
Duties and Responsibilities:
  1. Assist patients in and out of bed, using proper safe patient handling techniques
  2. Uses wheelchair, gurneys, and other similar mechanisms appropriate to patient needs and safe practice.
  3. Communicates effectively with hospital staff prior to moving patients.
  4. Ability to achieve and maintain a departmental response time and turnaround time established by the department's management team
  5. Ability to assess the patient's needs prior and during transport.
  6. Follows through with task or special projects.
  7. Reports defective wheelchairs, gurneys, and other similar mechanisms to responsible party.
  8. Cleans and maintains all patient transport equipment as needed
  9. Demonstrates knowledge regarding special needs and behaviors of age specific groups.
  10. Follows established department procedures to accurately verify and transport the proper patient by using proper patient identifiers established by National Patient Safety Goals.
  11. Verifies mode of transportation, obtains patient chart, required paperwork, required linen and/or equipment.
  12. Transports patient, chart, and required equipment to various treatment and or diagnostic areas throughout the hospital in a safe and effective manner 100% of the time.
  13. Provides emergency assistance to patients who become ill during the transport process until proper staff can be notified and assistance arrives.
  14. Reports to nursing units/procedural areas and notifies nursing staff/techs of patient being transported and destination.
  15. Initiates or assists in transfer process from bed to mode of transportation. Requests and obtains instruction/assistance from nursing staff for patients that require isolation techniques, two-man lifts, etc.
  16. Safely and effectively uses all equipment necessary to carry out duties.
  17. Uses Universal Precautions at all times.

  • Assist in other areas as assigned and within competency ability.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Knowledge
  • Knowledge acquired working in Patient Transportation Services or similar profession.
  • Knowledge of working in a Hospital setting
  • Knowledge of working with patients on a daily basis

  • Ability to complete successfully all competencies required to perform duties in assigned areas.

Education and Experience:
Education
  • High School Diploma or GED.

Required Licensure and/or Certifications:
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) training within 30 days of hire date.

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:
  • Work requires bending, pushing, pulling and lifting.
