Department: Emergency Department - Alpine

Supervisor Title: Emergency Department Manager

Location: Alpine, WY

Employment Status: Full-time (36 hours per week), Night Shift

Compensation: Minimum $16.38, commensurate with experience and certification.

Summary


While upholding the Star Valley Health mission, vision, and values this key position is responsible for the

seamless patient entry into the hospital in a timely, efficient, and customer-focused manner. The ER

admission clerks are often the first contact the patient has with the hospital and is entrusted with the

responsibility of providing a positive first image to the patient/family. Functions include: collecting complete

and accurate demographic, financial and clinical information during registration to facilitate appropriate patient

care and reimbursement; responding to patients' questions or concerns; and informing the patients of their

rights, responsibilities, and other required information. This is an at-will position.


Job Duties

  • Cordially greet external and internal customers that come into the ER
  •  Answer telephone, answer questions, and direct callers to the correct department.
  • Assist patients that require assistance with transferring into the ER from their vehicles.
  • Admit patients verifying all demographic information is correct scanning insurance cards and photo ID.
  • Responsible for interviewing patients or their representatives, where admission is unscheduled, for obtaining personal information or verifying information already on file, including emergency numbers and insurance information. Complies with EMTALA while obtaining such information.
  • Responsible for obtaining signatures on admissions paperwork.
  • Provides information to the patient/representative about billing, complaint process, patient rights, HIPAA, and visiting hours. Distributes hospital-specific literature.
  • Ability to acknowledge life-threatening conditions/ injuries and appropriately communicate to clinical staff for quick admission.
  • Communicates appropriately and clearly to supervisors, nurse managers, co-workers, and physicians.
  • Refers patients to the Business Office when financial arrangements need to be made.
  • Demonstrates an ability to be flexible, organized, and function well in stressful situations.
  • Treats patients and their families with respect and dignity; ensures the confidentiality of patients' records.
  • Capable of making decisions without continuous direction.
  • Handle confidential and proprietary information daily
  • Develop relationships with the ER staff and physicians to understand their patient interaction patterns.
  • Frequent rounding on family and visitors to address any potential needs.
  • Communicates to clinical staff situations that are life-threatening immediately.
  • Faxing appropriate information to receiving facilities and preparing paperwork for patients' transfer as necessary.
  • Liaison between patients and visitors waiting in the waiting room.
  •  Represent Star Valley Health in a positive manner on campus and in the community.
  • Attend meetings and training sessions as scheduled
  • Supports and maintains a culture of safety and quality.
  • Perform other duties and tasks as needs arise or delegated.

  • Sound analytical and problem-solving skills. 
  • Proficient computer skills with Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, and general internet. 
  • Skillful with general office equipment. 


Additional 

  • Hearing: Adequate to perform job duties in person and over the telephone. Able to use a stethoscope and respond to verbal questions. 
  • Speaking: Must be able to communicate clearly to patients in person and over the telephone. 
  • Vision: Visual acuity adequate to perform job duties, including visual examination of a patient and reading information printed sources and computer screen. 
  • Requires exposure to communicable diseases and/or bodily fluids.

  • ER Admissions Clerk may help in duties of ER tech if they hold current licensure (CNA, EMT, Paramedic). Refer to ER Technician job description for duties.


Experience & Education:

  • High School graduate or equivalent.
  • Current BLS certification or ability to obtain within 6 months of hire.
  • Clerical work history preferred, but not required.
  • General health care clerical experience.
  • Two plus years of reception/clerical/general office experience.
  • Post high school education.
