MS Access Database Developer
Role Overview
We are seeking a skilled and communicative MS Access Database Developer to modernize and optimize a critical legacy system. In this role, you will analyze our existing database architecture, redesign and normalize tables, and improve overall system performance.
Because this system directly supports our day-to-day operations, you will work closely with end-users to understand their pain points, gather requirements, and translate them into technical solutions. Excellent written and verbal communication skills are absolute non-negotiables for this position.
Schedule, Hours & Remote Work
  • Location: 100% Fully Remote
  • Core Hours: Monday through Friday, 8:00 AM - 11:00 AM Mountain Time (MT). Attendance during this specific window is required for remote team alignment, live video/audio calls, and user collaboration.
  • Flexible Hours: The remaining hours can be worked at your convenience from your home office.
  • Weekly Commitment: Minimum of 20 hours per week, with the potential to scale up to 40 hours per week depending on project load.
Key Responsibilities
  • Database Restructuring: Evaluate the architecture of an existing legacy MS Access database; redesign and update tables, relationships, and queries to improve efficiency and data integrity.
  • Remote User Collaboration: Interface directly with non-technical end-users via video calls, chat, and email to troubleshoot issues, gather feedback, and define system requirements.
  • Optimization & Maintenance: Refactor legacy VBA code, optimize complex SQL queries, and build user-friendly forms and reports.
  • Migration Readiness: Ensure data cleanliness and structured architecture to help pave the way for potential future migrations to SQL Server or cloud platforms.
  • Documentation: Create clear, concise documentation for the updated database schema, user workflows, and technical updates.
Qualifications & Skills
Technical Requirements:
  • Advanced MS Access Expertise: Deep understanding of MS Access (forms, reports, macros, and advanced query design).
  • Database Architecture: Strong experience in relational database design, data normalization, and indexing.
  • VBA & SQL: Proficiency in writing/debugging Visual Basic for Applications (VBA) and structured SQL queries within Access.
  • Legacy Systems: Proven experience auditing, refactoring, and updating older, messy database structures without disrupting current operations.
Soft Skills & Remote Work Basics:
  • Communication: Exceptional verbal and written English communication skills. You must be able to explain technical concepts simply to end-users and collaborate smoothly across digital channels.
  • Remote Independence: High self-motivation and a reliable, quiet home office setup with high-speed internet.
  • Problem-Solving: Strong analytical mindset with a knack for reverse-engineering legacy systems.
  • Self-Management: Highly organized and disciplined enough to manage a split/flexible schedule effectively without direct supervision.
