Job description

Senior Fire Protection Engineer
Join Salas O'Brien and be part of a team that provides creative solutions which build success for our clients and employees. Your role will include developing and sustaining relationships with in-house teams and contractors while providing technical solutions through design and consulting services that address the facility manager and/or owner's requirements. Job Summary: As a Fire Protection Engineer, you will report directly to the Mechanical Engineering Discipline Manager and work closely with Directors, Principals, Project Managers and Marketing staff to support all duties associated with Fire Protection Systems, Life Safety Plans, and Hazards Analysis.
Responsibilities:
  • Involved directly with multi-discipline commercial, metals industrial, chemical industrial, as well as other types of complex projects and give guidance to technical staff to accommodate specific project needs.
  • Engineer of Record for the fire protection portions of projects.
  • Work closely with Innovation and BIM Managers to leverage AI and Automation for Fire Protection design and workflow processes.
  • Meet regularly and as needed with other discipline leads and project managers for interdisciplinary goal tracking and technical visioning for Salas O'Brien and also how to positively impact the overall organization.
  • Leads Quality Control and Assurance program for all things related to Fire Protection Engineering and Design for the local team.
  • Lead all Training for Fire Protection related subjects for other engineers and possibly create content for corporate training media.
  • Perform hydraulic calculations of fire sprinkler & standpipe systems
  • Produce calculations to accurately size fire pumps and water storage tanks to meet project requirements.
  • Analyze and advise on Occupancy Hazard Classification and subsequently determine sprinkler system demands.
  • Develop business standards and details for FPE content.
  • Be responsible for the total fire protection systems and specifications for projects.
  • Deal directly with clients/owners/contractors to determine specific project needs.
  • Be familiar with and apply applicable codes and standards, including NFPA, IBC, IFC, UFC, FM Global, etc.
  • Supplement Salas O'Brien design standards and administrative procedures where needed.
  • Learn Salas O'Brien client base and the services provided.

Qualifications:
  • Minimum of 3 years of practicing as a licensed professional engineer, FPE preferred.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Bachelor's degree in related engineering field is required.
  • Ability to perform under pressure and work on multiple projects concurrently.
  • Demonstrate a high standard of ethics, professionalism, client focus, customer service, ownership, and accountability
  • Ability to effectively communicate design intent with other disciplines and owners.

Preferred Computing Skills
  • A working knowledge of BIM strategies using Revit
  • A working knowledge of BIM 360 collaboration
  • Microsoft Office applications
  • Other duties as assigned. Possible HVAC and Domestic Plumbing design and engineering as needed, but no previous experience required.
  • Perform business development and marketing activities as assigned, including creating and maintaining relationships with current and potential clients
  • Previous or current engagement as NFPA Technical Committee member/officer is preferred but not required.
  • Experience training and mentoring design staff and entry level engineers.

Physical Requirements
  • Lifting/carrying: Carrying light loads related to field measurement equipment, equipment cases weighing 15 lbs. or less.
  • Dexterity: Ability to type using a keyboard with relative efficiency, ability to make handwritten notes and sketches indoors and outdoors at industrial plant and construction sites at any time of the year.
  • Walking/Climbing: Ability to use multi-level stair towers and rung ladders unassisted.
  • Visual Acuity: Ability to discern single line and 3-dimensional computer images representing objects being designed or drafted.
  • Hearing: Ability to hear safety alarms and signals while wearing hearing protection.
  • Physical exertion: Ability to walk at least one mile on industrial plants and construction site.
