Job Summary
The Multifunction Services Associate Supervisor serves as an entry-level leadership development role within Environmental Services (EVS). This position supports department operations by learning EVS workflows, reinforcing quality and safety standards, assisting with training and onboarding, completing required inspections and observations, supporting service recovery, and escalating operational concerns to appropriate leadership. The role is designed to build leadership skills while supporting departmental goals.
Responsibilities*
- Learn EVS operations, workflows, departmental standards, and leadership practices through hands-on exposure and participation in daily department activities
- Monitor department workflows, turnaround times, and service needs; communicate barriers, delays, or concerns to EVS leadership
- Observe recruitment, interviewing, staff selection, performance management, and other supervisory processes to develop leadership competency
- Assist with onboarding, orientation, training, and skills reinforcement for new and existing staff
- Provide peer-level support and reinforce expectations related to cleaning procedures, infection prevention, safety, customer service, and professionalism through modeling and guidance
- Support service recovery by responding to routine concerns and escalating complex patient, visitor, staff, or customer issues to appropriate leadership
- Complete assigned inspections, audits, and observations, including hand hygiene, patient interviews, restroom inspections, employee observations, and environmental cleanliness checks
- Document assigned observations, inspections, trends, and concerns accurately and timely
- Identify and report quality, safety, supply, equipment, workflow, and compliance concerns to EVS leadership
- Promote adherence to department standards, Infection Prevention requirements, Joint Commission expectations, and applicable safety and regulatory guidelines
- Support timely completion of required mandatory education, competencies, inspections, and department documentation, escalating concerns to leadership as needed
- Learn and perform Halo disinfection as needed
- Learn and cover Dispatch as needed
- Assist with department projects, quality improvement activities, regulatory readiness, special cleaning requests, and other duties as assigned
Required Qualifications*
- High School Diploma or GED
- Minimum 3 years of experience in environmental services, housekeeping, custodial services, hospitality, healthcare support services, or a related service environment
- Ability to meet physical requirements of the job including frequent standing, walking, bending, reaching, pushing, pulling, lifting up to 50 lbs, and working with cleaning chemicals and equipment as required
- Prior customer service experience
- Working knowledge of cleaning procedures, safety standards, chemical use, and proper use of cleaning equipment
- Ability to learn and apply EVS workflows, departmental standards, regulatory requirements, and hospital practices
- Ability to communicate professionally and respectfully with staff, patients, visitors, customers, peers, and leadership
- Strong listening, empathy, and interpersonal skills
- Demonstrated ability to remain calm and professional under pressure and in stressful situations
- Demonstrated ability to prioritize competing tasks and responsibilities while remaining flexible and responsive to changing needs or direction
- Demonstrated ability to provide peer-level support, model professional behavior, and reinforce department expectations in a respectful and constructive manner
- Ability to respond to routine service concerns and escalate complex or sensitive issues appropriately
- Strong attention to detail and organizational skills
- Ability to complete forms, checklists, observations, and documentation accurately and in a timely manner
- Proficiency with basic computer operations, Microsoft applications, email, and electronic documentation tools
- Ability to work assigned shifts, weekends, holidays, and during emergency or surge situations as needed
Desired Qualifications*
- Experience working in Environmental Services in a hospital, ambulatory care, long-term care, or other healthcare setting
- Previous experience serving as a team lead, trainer, or informal peer leader
- Familiarity with hospital infection prevention practices, isolation precautions, hand hygiene expectations, discharge cleaning, and high-touch surface cleaning
- Knowledge of Joint Commission standards, regulatory readiness, patient safety practices, and healthcare environmental cleaning requirements
- Knowledge of University of Michigan and Michigan Medicine systems such as MiChart and ServiceNow
- Knowledge of University of Michigan and Michigan Medicine policies and procedures
- Experience working in a union environment

Modes of Work
Positions that are eligible for hybrid or mobile/remote work mode are at the discretion of the hiring department. Work agreements are reviewed annually at a minimum and are subject to change at any time, and for any reason, throughout the course of employment. Learn more about the work modes .
All shifts/positions are onsite.
Work Schedule
This position is Evenings / Friday-Monday / 4:00pm-12:30am
All shifts may require work on weekends and/or holiday rotations, and the willingness and ability to work longer hours as needed.
Background Screening
Michigan Medicine conducts background screening and pre-employment drug testing on job candidates upon acceptance of a contingent job offer and may use a third party administrator to conduct background screenings. Background screenings are performed in compliance with the Fair Credit Report Act. Pre-employment drug testing applies to all selected candidates, including new or additional faculty and staff appointments, as well as transfers from other U-M campuses.
