Job Description

The Desert Research Institute (DRI) is seeking an entry level Human Resources Generalist to serve as a key Human Resources point of contact for employees at all levels including, faculty, students, volunteers, research, and administrative professional and staff members, at DRI's Reno, NV campus.

This role provides timely and accurate benefits, record keeping, recruiting, orientation, performance tracking, HR information system and management, and employee guidance. This position will be responsible for compiling data reports, surveys, and HR metrics; and providing consistent policy administration, interpretation, and communication aligned with the Nevada System of Higher Education (NSHE). This position requires an individual with exceptional customer service focus, who is committed to ensuring DRI's HR needs are handled efficiently, professionally, and confidentially.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Serves as liaison for DRI employees with payroll, HR, and division business staff;
  • Ensures the confidentiality of HR related information is maintained at all times;
  • Assists with recruitment process for hourly employees and technologists and provides support for faculty and postdoctoral recruitments;
  • Maintains DRI branded dashboards on large recruitment websites (LinkedIn, Indeed, etc.);
  • Posts advertisements in strategic locations to attract broad pools of applicants;
  • Actively sources potential candidates to attract a diverse pool of applicants for search committees to review;
  • Completes the on-boarding/orientation process for hourly employees and volunteers in an organized, welcoming, and professional manner;
  • Conducts candidate benefit summary meetings as needed, maintaining a clear understanding of when to refer employees to an HR benefits subject matter expert;
  • Assists in supporting DRI's Learning Management System, Bridge, and ensures continued compliance with new and reoccurring employee trainings;
  • Reviews all applicants for minimum qualifications; downloads and combines resumes, contacts candidates for missing information; creates scoring spreadsheets for search committee;
  • Handles employee relations matters with confidentiality and professionalism and ensures employees are provided with resources/next steps;
  • Leads graduate student support with responsibility for on-boarding and orientation of graduate students, coordination with DRI divisions regarding ongoing student status including ensuring accurate compensation;
  • Processes HR purchasing and requisition transactions, including reimbursements, in a timely manner, verifying correct and accurate documentation
  • May lead, assist and/or support special projects, as needed; and
  • Performs other general HR duties, as needed.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution in Human Resources, Business, or closely related field
  • Six months of professional human resources experience or one year of related work experience
  • High level of proficiency using Microsoft Office Suite, with an emphasis on Excel, Word, Outlook, and PowerPoint
  • Ability to establish strong working relationships with team members, leaders, employees, other NSHE institution contacts, and vendor points of contact
  • Demonstrated ability to resolve problems at the lowest possible level, using creative, win-win solutions
  • Demonstrated ability to multi-task and prioritize
  • Excellent interpersonal, teamwork, and communication skills
  • Demonstrated experience with discretion and confidentiality handling personnel matters and information

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Experience using applicant tracking, HR information systems, databases, and/or electronic filing and tracking tools
  • Technical knowledge of Federal and State employment laws, including clear understanding and application of policy and procedure manuals
  • Experience with recruiting methods focused on broadening the pool of applicants
  • Human Resources Certification (e.g., PHR, SHRM, HRM, CHRP)

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

  • Employment is contingent upon a successful completion of a background check
  • May require occasional travel to DRI's Las Vegas campus or to conferences for recruiting as needed
  • This position requires the ability to perform physical tasks of occasionally lifting 30 lbs., moving, lifting, or packing files for shipping or storage. Sitting for long periods and periodic stooping and bending

Salary/Benefits

Minimum starting salary is $57,000 and is commensurate with experience and education and alignment with similar public academic-research institutions. Candidates will be hired at the level that is comparable to their experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities.

DRI offers a benefits package that includes health, dental, vision, and life insurance; including 19.25% retirement match, 24 annual leave days, beginning balance of 30 sick leave days, 12 paid holidays, educational benefits, and the choice of three health insurance plans that can be supplemented with flexible spending accounts or health savings accounts. Additionally, there is no state income tax and no social security deduction. This position is eligible for relocation assistance.
