Position Description
This position is responsible for assisting in the maintenance and repair of county buildings, grounds, and parks. The specific duties and assignments within this role will vary based on the division to which the employee is assigned (Facilities, Grounds, Custodial), but some crossover responsibilities may be required to ensure the overall maintenance and functionality of county properties.
Position Objectives
Facilities Division Responsibilities:
  • Assist in the maintenance of county buildings and general construction repairs.
  • Assist in the preventative maintenance and repairs of plumbing, HVAC, and electrical systems.
  • Assist in the repair of ceilings, walls, and floors; provide carpentry repairs as needed.
  • Assist in the repair of doors, windows, and locks.
  • Paint interior and exterior surfaces.
  • Assist with snow removal operations.
  • Assist in constructing and moving furniture.

General Responsibilities (All Divisions):
  • Ensure compliance with safety policies and procedures.
  • Maintain assigned tools and equipment; make minor repairs.
  • Perform related duties as required to maintain county properties.

CROSSOVER RESPONSIBILITIES
Grounds Division Responsibilities:
  • Operate lawnmowers, weed trimmers, leaf blowers, and other ground maintenance equipment.
  • Trim and remove trees and shrubs.
  • Assist in the maintenance and repair of landscaping.
  • Collect litter and garbage from county property.
  • Assist with snow removal operations.

Custodial Division Responsibilities:
  • Cleans, sweeps, mops, waxes, and polishes floors by hand or machine; vacuums and cleans carpets.
  • Washes windows, screens, sills, woodwork, doors, desks, walls, and ceilings.
  • Cleans, restocks, and sanitizes rest rooms, dust, and vacuums rooms.
  • Assists in the inventory and stocking of custodial supplies.
  • Collects and disposes of waste.

Desirable Training and Experience
  • Ability to read, write and perform mathematical calculations at a level commonly associated with the completion of high school or equivalent.
  • Sufficient experience to understand the basic principles relevant to the major duties of the position. On the job training will be provided as this is an entry level position and requires no previous experience.
  • Employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds.
  • Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid driver's license issued by the State of Virginia for the type of vehicle or equipment operated.

  • Knowledge of building, custodial, and/or grounds maintenance principles.
