Will AI replace underwriting?

AI is increasingly used to assist disability underwriters by automating data analysis and risk assessment, improving efficiency and consistency. However, human underwriters still play a crucial role in interpreting complex cases, making judgment calls, and ensuring compliance, so AI is more of a tool than a complete replacement in the underwriting process.

What company hires the most people with disabilities?

Many large insurance and financial services companies, including those that employ disability underwriters, have initiatives to hire individuals with disabilities. Companies such as The Hartford, MetLife, and Prudential are known for inclusive hiring practices and may employ significant numbers of people with disabilities in roles like underwriting and claims processing.

Can I get into underwriting with no experience?

Entry level disability underwriters can often start with little to no prior experience, as employers may provide on-the-job training and look for strong analytical skills and attention to detail. Relevant certifications or coursework in insurance or risk assessment can improve chances, but many employers hire candidates with a willingness to learn and basic qualifications. Experience requirements vary by company, but entry-level roles typically focus on potential and foundational skills.

What jobs make 5000 a week without a degree?

Entry level disability underwriters typically do not earn $5,000 a week; however, high-paying roles such as sales managers, real estate brokers, or certain skilled trades can reach or exceed this income level without a college degree, often requiring experience, certifications, or specialized skills. These jobs may involve commission, bonuses, or performance-based pay and often demand strong communication, negotiation, or technical skills.

Job description

Want to work for a Berkshire Hathaway company? Here's your opportunity!

We are a commercial property & casualty insurance company looking to fill entry-level underwriting positions. We consider a variety of backgrounds and do not require insurance experience. Our on-the-job training provides the right candidate the opportunity to be successful in this position.

What is underwriting? Insurance underwriters use analytical skills to review information from an applicant to evaluate the degree of risk involved in a business or operation to determine if the applicant should be approved for a policy. The underwriter then uses our technology and data to determine the coverages to provide and the premium to be charged for the risk. Our underwriting professionals utilize strong communication and customer service skills by asking questions and making decisions over the phone and via e-mail with our agents.

What will you do?

  • UNDERWRITING ACTIVITIES: Reviews submissions, endorsement request and/or renewal policies from agents for acceptability prior to quoting. Follows up with agent or broker for additional information, as necessary. Determines proper classification of risks and uses company software to rate risks. Identifies proper coverage structure for risk including any policy endorsements and exclusions required, develops proposed rating, and applies schedule credits/debits within company guidelines. Makes underwriting decisions on routine insurance risks and refers risks outside underwriting authority to appropriate referral underwriting resource, as appropriate.
  • QUOTING: Prepares and delivers quotes to agents within underwriting authority or with proper referral underwriting approval, as appropriate. Resolves outstanding concerns with agent, answers questions, and may negotiate changes, as appropriate. Explains commercial coverage to agents and/or brokers. Ensures the terms and conditions of the quotes are clearly outlined and guides agent through binding process. Manages pending workload to ensure agencies receive excellent service on quotes when needed.
  • QUALITY CONTROL AND REVIEW: Performs quality control inspections of system bound policies, endorsements, and renewal policies. Reviews applications, agency correspondence, and other underwriting information received versus policy to reconcile any discrepancies or errors and to ensure accurate information is contained in policy. Reviews proper rating classification and coding of bound policies using combination of information available in application, loss control inspections, and telephone conversations with agents and brokers. Handles problems and takes appropriate action on unusual discrepancies. Initiates policy changes and takes underwriting actions as appropriate within underwriting authority including cancellation or non-renewal.
  • THIRD PARTY DATA: Utilizes third party tools, data, and services to enable better underwriting decisions, improve accuracy of rating/exposure information, and produce better underwriting results.
  • QUALITY ASSURANCE AND TESTING: Participates in the testing of rating, quoting, policy administration, and other software as required including the completion of assigned test cases within designated time frame. Identifies potential problems and notify testing coordinators.
