Job description

WESTMINSTER POLICE DEPARTMENT Now Hiring: Entry-Level Police Officer. Starting Salary: $62,000 per year. Contact a WPD recruiter at Recruitment@westminstermd.gov with any questions.

ABOUT WPD The Westminster Police Department is a full-service municipal law enforcement agency providing 24/7 coverage for our community. Our guiding principles include a commitment to policing that is community-oriented, problem-oriented, and data-driven. WPD currently has forty-two (42) sworn police officers who hold the ranks of Police Officer, Police Officer First Class, Corporal, Sergeant, Lieutenant, Captain, Major/Deputy Chief, and Chief of Police.

The Department is comprised of the Patrol Bureau and the Criminal Investigations Bureau. WPD features a K9 Unit, a Strategic Enforcement Unit, and long-term assignments with the Carroll County Drug and Firearms Trafficking Task Force and the Child Advocacy and Investigations Center. There are ample opportunities for training, certifications for specialty skills, and collateral duty assignments, including bicycle patrol, Crisis Intervention Team, Crash Reconstruction Unit, Crisis Response Team, and Crisis Negotiations Team.

WPD has thirteen (13) professional staff members who provide integral support throughout the Department. These valued members work in Communications and Dispatch Unit, the Body-Worn Camera program, the Auxiliary Police Unit, grant-funded outreach teams, administrative support, and college internships. MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS Be a United States citizen. Be 21 years of age at the time of completion of the police academy. Possess a high school diploma or GED certificate.

Be eligible to possess a firearm. Possess a valid driver's license. Have no felony or serious misdemeanor convictions; no DUI convictions within the last three (3) years.

Meet the minimum standards set by the Maryland Police and Correctional Training Commissions (MPCTC). Be eligible to obtain a Maryland Training and Standards Commission Certification and Training Standards Compliance Card. MPCTC DISQUALIFIERS Convicted of selling, manufacturing, or distributing a controlled dangerous substance, narcotic drug, or marijuana.

Illegally sold, produced, cultivated, distributed, or transported a controlled dangerous substance, narcotic drug, or marijuana. Illegally used a controlled dangerous substance or narcotic drug within 36 months of an application for certification. Used Marijuana within 12 months of an application for certification.

Used a controlled dangerous substance, narcotic drug, or marijuana while employed to enforce federal, state, or local law by any government agency. Used Heroin, Phencyclidine (PCP), Lysergic Acid Diethylamide (LSD). Used a controlled dangerous substance or narcotic drug, or any combination of controlled dangerous substances or narcotic drugs (excluding marijuana), a total of five or more times or one time since becoming 21 years old.

HIRING STEPS Successful applicants must pass each of the following: Application. Candidates are required to Login & Apply through PoliceApp (click hyperlinked text). There is a $35 fee to complete the application process.

Applicants are responsible for checking their email and logging into their PoliceApp account to monitor updates. Written Exam. Applicants will receive an email after their applications have been reviewed.

If approved, applicants will be invited to complete the NTN Tests - Law Enforcement through the Law Enforcement Testing System (FrontLine National). The total test time is approximately 2 hours and 15 minutes, with three components: Human Relations Test, Report Writing Test, and Multiple-Choice Reading Test. The cost to complete this test is $65.

Candidate's scores are valid for one year and can be used for other participating law enforcement agencies for a nominal fee. When applicants successfully pass the written exam, they will be invited to complete the physical ability test.

The Westminster Police Department uses the same testing standards as Maryland Police and Correctional Training Commissions (MPCTC), which utilizes the Cooper's Fitness Test as the functional assessment to qualify. A minimum percentile score of 30 is required to pass. More information is available at MPCTC's website.

Oral Interview. The next step is an invitation to complete the oral interview, a panel that asks questions and scores corresponding answers based on an established rubric for the entry-level police officer position. Polygraph Examination.

Applicants who pass all prior stages will be invited to participate in a polygraph examination. Pre-employment Background Investigation. At this stage, applicants undergo a thorough background check upon completion of the Confidential Questionnaire (CQ) and submission of supporting documentation.

Psychological Screening, Drug Screening, and Physical Examination. Upon receiving a conditional job offer, applicants must pass a psychological screening, drug screening, and physical examination. Upon successful completion of the hiring process, we will schedule and pay you to attend an approved MPCTC Police Academy.
