Job description

Since 1973, JR Engineering has successfully served a variety of clients throughout Colorado. Areas of service include land development, surveying, surface transportation, water resources, and structural engineering as well as construction services in each of our major disciplines. Our in-house staff of talented engineers, surveyors, and support personnel enables us to respond quickly to demanding assignments, project schedules, and changing project scopes. With an annual Net Revenue of $18.5 million in 2025, JR Engineering currently has 100 employees with plans to grow to 120 employees over the next 3-5 years.

Job Summary:

The Team Lead โ€“ Land Development serves as the chief of their respective team within the Land Development department. This team generally consists of 2 - 6 direct reports. The role requires managing projects (or portions thereof) and assembling the resources required to make each of those successful.

Supervisory Essential Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Coordinate directly with the Department Head, Group Manager, or Project Manager to identify team priorities, deliverables, and submittals for various projects. Delegates tasks effectively and manages workload within their own Team and communicates needs interdepartmentally.
  • Plans, organizes, directs, and reviews all the activities of the employees that comprise the team. Responsible for overall technical performance of the Team. Includes QA/QC, and maintaining staff's minimum utilization targets.
  • Act as a mentor and oversee Project Engineer and Design Engineer's work product. Provide meaningful direction, training, and feedback to younger staff to grow their knowledge, building a strong team atmosphere and working relationships.
  • Evaluate and report on Team's and individuals' staff capabilities at regular intervals. Conduct performance reviews.
  • May sign and seal drawings prepared under their supervision.

Production Essential Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Lead projects (or portions thereof), acting as a Production Lead which includes supervising staff working on their projects.
  • Demonstrate advanced technical skill proficiencies and efficient time management skills to handle multiple projects simultaneously and with minimal supervision to meet deadlines.
  • Provide professional and technical staff assistance. Identify clear, articulate direction to staff regarding goals and performance expectations, including budget and schedule control.
  • Review work from staff to ensure sound and accurate designs that meet all applicable criteria, client or project goals, and the high standard of quality that the company demands. This includes reviewing construction plans, cost estimates, calculations, models, and reports for accuracy and completeness.
  • Optimize work process by monitoring progress, identifying bottlenecks, implementing new efficient methods, and driving for continuous improvement.
  • Maintains accurate schedule & submittal logs for discussion with project team.

Client Facing Essential Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Occasional client interaction in meetings, phone conversations, and email correspondence. Routine interaction with other firms, planners, A/E representatives, contractors, and review agencies. Frequent project meeting attendance (internal and external).
  • Develop positive working relationships with city and county professionals and other regulatory entities. Regularly review jurisdiction specific regulations to ensure compliance.
  • Be involved during conceptual and creative project planning stages to ensure cost effective, environmentally sound, and aesthetically pleasing solutions.
  • Maintains detailed records of all external communications.
  • Coordinate with Department Head, Group Manager, and Client Manager to provide occasional support for proposal preparation or notes regarding additional services.
  • Understand underlying goals of client and offer solutions that may extend beyond original stated objective(s).

Supervisory Required Skills/Abilities:

  • Strong leadership skills, with the ability to manage/mentor junior staff and work well in teams.
  • Strong interpersonal, problem solving, conflict resolution, analytical, influencing, facilitation, and negotiation.
  • Must demonstrate ability to work effectively on a collaborative team with management and non-management level members to accomplish objectives under pressure. Must also be highly self-motivated and self-directed with the ability to exercise independent judgment and take action appropriate to the situation.
  • Make sound decisions quickly, while managing priorities and resources in a dynamic environment.

Technical Required Skills/Abilities:

  • Strong technical expertise in the Civil Engineering design of Land Development projects.
  • Experience in project planning, resource and budget estimating, understanding and working to standards of quality and safety as required.
  • Well organized and articulate (verbal & written); must be able to prioritize and execute effectively.
  • Knowledge of AutoCAD Civil 3D and associated design software.
  • Broad multi-disciplinary knowledge in civil engineering including land development, transportation, water resources, wastewater, structural, and geotechnical topics.
  • High level knowledge of discipline-related software programs and ability to interpret and summarize technical results and concepts. May include technical knowledge with hydrology, hydraulics, utility design and associated modeling software (StormCAD, CUHP, EPA SWMM, and HEC-RAS experience preferred).
  • Experience with regulatory agencies, with familiarity with federal, state, and local policies. This includes typical review & approval processes.

Interpersonal Required Skills/Abilities:

  • Must be able to engage current and potential clients in a professional manner which positively represents the company.
  • Know when to negotiate or escalate situations in order to reach mutually beneficial agreements.
  • Explain complex information simply, verbally and in writing.

Education/Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering from an accredited college or university.
  • Valid Colorado PE License (preferred).
  • Minimum of 5 years of applicable civil engineering experience.
