What is an engineering technologist?

Engineering Technologists are professionals who apply engineering and technical principles to solve practical problems in a variety of industries. They often work alongside engineers to implement, operate, and improve systems, equipment, or processes. Unlike engineers, who may focus more on theory and design, technologists emphasize the application and implementation of technology. Their roles can include testing, quality control, production support, and project management. Engineering Technologists play a crucial role in bridging the gap between engineering theory and real-world application.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an engineering technologist?

To thrive as an Engineering Technologist, you need a solid background in applied engineering principles, mathematics, and problem-solving, usually supported by a relevant degree or diploma. Familiarity with CAD software, laboratory instrumentation, and industry-specific standards or certifications such as CET (Certified Engineering Technologist) is typically required. Strong communication, teamwork, and analytical thinking are key soft skills that help bridge the gap between engineers and technicians. These abilities are crucial for ensuring efficient project execution, accurate technical support, and effective collaboration in engineering environments.

What are some typical challenges engineering technologists face when working on multidisciplinary teams?

Engineering Technologists often collaborate with engineers, designers, and technicians from various disciplines, which can present challenges such as differing communication styles, technical jargon, and varying project priorities. Successfully navigating these challenges requires strong interpersonal skills, adaptability, and a willingness to bridge knowledge gaps. Building rapport and understanding each team member's expertise helps ensure project goals are met efficiently and that all technical requirements are addressed.

What is the difference between Engineering Technologist vs Engineering Technician?

AspectEngineering TechnologistEngineering Technician
CredentialsDiploma or degree in engineering technologyDiploma or certificate in engineering technology
Work EnvironmentDesign, development, and project managementImplementation, testing, and maintenance
Employer & Industry UsageUsed in engineering firms, manufacturing, constructionUsed in similar industries, often under supervision

Engineering Technologists typically hold a diploma or degree and are involved in designing and managing engineering projects, while Engineering Technicians focus on implementing and testing designs. Both roles are essential in engineering fields, but Technologists often have broader responsibilities and higher qualifications.

Are engineering technologists in demand?

Engineering technologists are in demand in industries such as manufacturing, construction, and energy, where their skills in applying engineering principles and technical knowledge are valued. Employment growth is driven by infrastructure development, technological advancements, and the need for technical expertise in project management and design. Certification and proficiency with tools like CAD and project management software can enhance job prospects.

What can an engineering technologist do?

An engineering technologist applies engineering principles to develop, test, and implement technical solutions in fields such as manufacturing, construction, and electronics. They often work with engineers to design systems, troubleshoot issues, and operate specialized tools and software. Certification and technical skills are typically required for this role.

From applied research to advanced engineering, the Engineering Technologist team has the expertise to shape ground-breaking products, material, and processes. Itโ€™s a fascinating field of work. Weโ€™re involved in assessing the competition, developing technology and product strategies, and generating intellectual property. We lead technology investigations, analyze industry capabilities, and recommend potential acquisitions or vendor partner opportunities. Our insights influence product architecture and definitions. And we work with colleagues across the business to ensure our products always lead the way.

Join us to do the best work of your career and make a profound social impact as aSenior Engineer โ€“ Mechanical Engineering Software Tools (Technical Staff) on ourClient Solutions Group (CSG) Engineering Technologistteam in Austin, Texas.

What youโ€™ll achieve:

As aSenior Engineer - Mechanical Engineering Software Tools (Technical Staff) Engineering Technologist, youโ€™ll provide expert guidance on technology investigations, prototyping strategies, and data generation that drive product decisions. Youโ€™ll synthesize insights from experiments and literature to advise leaders and shape roadmaps. You will mentor technologists and contribute to playbooks and tool improvements.

We are seeking a Senior Engineer to lead, support, and influence the strategy and execution of Mechanical Engineering software tools across the CSG organization. This role is designed for a versatile engineering tools expert who thrives at the intersection of handsโ€‘on engineering support, strategic tool governance, and crossโ€‘organizational influence. You will be the goโ€‘to authority on PTC Creo and Windchill, shaping how our engineering teams leverage these platforms today and into the future.

If you are a highโ€‘level problem solver who can navigate evolving requirements, influence senior leadership, and mentor engineers at all levels, we want to talk to you.

You will:
  • Lead CSG Mechanical Engineering tooling strategy by shaping organizational direction, influencing senior executives on investment priorities, predicting tool needs and budget requirements, and partnering with the Infrastructure Solutions Group (ISG) organization to ensure CSG needs are prioritized in enterpriseโ€‘wide and modern tools efforts

  • Serve as the Subject Matter Expert (SME) on Parametric Technology Corporation (PTC) Creo Parametric and PTC Windchill, driving CAD governance and standardization across the CSG organization while evaluating new PTC software versions and interfacing directly with PTC to assess capabilities and recommend adoption strategies
