What is an engineering technologist?

Engineering Technologists are professionals who apply engineering and technical principles to solve practical problems in a variety of industries. They often work alongside engineers to implement, operate, and improve systems, equipment, or processes. Unlike engineers, who may focus more on theory and design, technologists emphasize the application and implementation of technology. Their roles can include testing, quality control, production support, and project management. Engineering Technologists play a crucial role in bridging the gap between engineering theory and real-world application.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an engineering technologist?

To thrive as an Engineering Technologist, you need a solid background in applied engineering principles, mathematics, and problem-solving, usually supported by a relevant degree or diploma. Familiarity with CAD software, laboratory instrumentation, and industry-specific standards or certifications such as CET (Certified Engineering Technologist) is typically required. Strong communication, teamwork, and analytical thinking are key soft skills that help bridge the gap between engineers and technicians. These abilities are crucial for ensuring efficient project execution, accurate technical support, and effective collaboration in engineering environments.

What are some typical challenges engineering technologists face when working on multidisciplinary teams?

Engineering Technologists often collaborate with engineers, designers, and technicians from various disciplines, which can present challenges such as differing communication styles, technical jargon, and varying project priorities. Successfully navigating these challenges requires strong interpersonal skills, adaptability, and a willingness to bridge knowledge gaps. Building rapport and understanding each team member's expertise helps ensure project goals are met efficiently and that all technical requirements are addressed.

What is the difference between Engineering Technologist vs Engineering Technician?

AspectEngineering TechnologistEngineering Technician
CredentialsDiploma or degree in engineering technologyDiploma or certificate in engineering technology
Work EnvironmentDesign, development, and project managementImplementation, testing, and maintenance
Employer & Industry UsageUsed in engineering firms, manufacturing, constructionUsed in similar industries, often under supervision

Engineering Technologists typically hold a diploma or degree and are involved in designing and managing engineering projects, while Engineering Technicians focus on implementing and testing designs. Both roles are essential in engineering fields, but Technologists often have broader responsibilities and higher qualifications.

Are engineering technologists in demand?

Engineering technologists are in demand in industries such as manufacturing, construction, and energy, where their skills in applying engineering principles and technical knowledge are valued. Employment growth is driven by infrastructure development, technological advancements, and the need for technical expertise in project management and design. Certification and proficiency with tools like CAD and project management software can enhance job prospects.

What can an engineering technologist do?

An engineering technologist applies engineering principles to develop, test, and implement technical solutions in fields such as manufacturing, construction, and electronics. They often work with engineers to design systems, troubleshoot issues, and operate specialized tools and software. Certification and technical skills are typically required for this role.

Job Title: Senior Electromechanical Engineering Technologist (On-Site in Wichita, KS)

Job Description

This Senior Electromechanical Engineering Technologist role leads the design and development of electric motors, actuators, and electromagnetic devices for aerospace and defense applications. You will own products from initial concept through production release, including detailed design, simulation, prototyping, testing, qualification, and sustaining engineering. The position focuses on motor and actuator design, electromagnetic simulation and analysis, and full product development and qualification while collaborating closely with cross-functional teams across engineering, manufacturing, quality, and test.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the design and development of electric motors, actuators, resolvers, and related electromagnetic devices for aerospace and defense applications.
  • Perform electromagnetic simulations, testing, and performance analysis to optimize motor and actuator designs.
  • Support prototype builds by providing hands-on guidance, troubleshooting issues, and refining designs based on test results.
  • Plan and execute qualification activities to ensure products meet high-reliability aerospace and defense standards.
  • Create clear and accurate engineering documentation, including drawings, specifications, and technical reports.
  • Develop and maintain electromechanical product designs from concept through production release and sustaining engineering.
  • Collaborate closely with manufacturing, quality, and test teams to resolve technical challenges and ensure manufacturability and reliability.
  • Contribute to reliability analysis activities, including FMEA and MTBF assessments, where applicable.
  • Participate in cross-functional design reviews and provide technical leadership on motor development programs.
  • Manage multiple programs and priorities simultaneously while maintaining strong documentation and attention to detail.
  • Communicate effectively with internal and external customers to understand requirements, present technical solutions, and support product adoption.
  • Support production transition and qualification testing activities to ensure smooth handoff from development to manufacturing.

Essential Skills

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Electromechanical Engineering, or a closely related field.
  • 5–7+ years of experience in motor design or electromagnetic product design.
  • Proven experience supporting products from concept through production release and sustaining engineering.
  • Strong background in electrical engineering and mechanical engineering principles as they apply to electromechanical systems.
  • Hands-on experience in electric motor design and actuator design.
  • Proficiency in electromagnetic analysis and simulation for motors and actuators.
  • Experience with electromechanical product development, including electromagnetic simulation and motor development.
  • Familiarity with motor drives and power electronics at a level sufficient to support integration with electromechanical products.
  • Experience with reliability analysis methods such as FMEA and MTBF in an engineering context.
  • Demonstrated ability to support prototype builds, including troubleshooting and resolving design and test issues.
  • Strong documentation skills with high attention to detail in drawings, specifications, and reports.
  • Hands-on troubleshooting and testing mindset, comfortable working in lab environments.
  • Ability to work effectively in cross-functional teams with engineering, manufacturing, quality, and test functions.
  • Strong customer-facing communication skills, including the ability to explain complex technical concepts clearly.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects, programs, and priorities simultaneously in a fast-paced environment.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Experience with Ansys Maxwell, Ansys Electronics Desktop, RMxprt, or Simcenter Magnet for electromagnetic simulation.
  • background in motor drives and power electronics integration for electromechanical systems.
  • Experience performing FMEA and MTBF reliability analysis for high-reliability products.
  • Familiarity with aerospace and defense qualification standards such as DO-160 and MIL-STD-810.
