Project Overview
ASARCO has initiated a multi-year expansion of its Concentrator and Tailings Storage Facility representing a multi-billion-dollar capital investment. The program commenced in 2024 and is expected to continue through 2030, encompassing feasibility, detailed engineering, procurement, construction, commissioning, and final project closeout.
Position Summary
ASARCO is seeking a Project Engineering Manager to provide strategic and operational leadership for all engineering activities across the project portfolio.
Reporting to the Project Director, the Project Engineering Manager serves as a key member of the Owner's team and provides oversight of engineering governance from pre-feasibility through execution and closure. This role ensures engineering deliverables meet defined scope, quality, safety, schedule, and budget objectives.
The Engineering Manager leads a multidisciplinary team of engineers and Subject Matter Experts (SMEs), working in close collaboration with EP/CM partners, operations, maintenance, procurement, construction, commissioning, and technical stakeholders. The role ensures disciplined engineering execution, technical assurance, value optimization, and alignment with corporate standards and regulatory requirements..
Duties/Responsibilities:
  • Manage the engineering and SME team ensuring the consistent application of codes, standards, and best practices across the project portfolio.
  • Direct and review the engineering activities to ensure that work quality is satisfactory and meets company objectives and adhere to international and local standards.
  • Collaborate with the EP/CM teams, site operations, site maintenance, site technical teams, third party consultants and other internal and external service providers.
  • Develop and implement fit-for-purpose solutions to facilitate efficient and quality design for the full spectrum of work fronts in the portfolio.
  • Establish and maintain a culture of continuous improvement through analyzing, developing, documenting, and implementing standards and best practices.
  • Ensure engineering and design processes, systems, and software are properly setup and implemented. Coordinate quality audit verifications to ensure compliance with all relevant engineering standards and internal procedures for all design activities. Recommend and execute corrective actions as required.
  • Ensure appropriate operational engagement in project execution focusing on change management and performance assurance.
  • Provide operational implementation support for new designs, ensuring appropriate system performance, development of best practices and documentation.
  • Ensure inputs to project feasibility and detail designs meet company requirements before commencing work. Review inputs to Engineering Execution Plans (EEP) and to Project Execution Plans (PEP).
  • Guide project-level engineering deliverable and task development adhering to packaging best practices. Ensure engineering budgets meet the scope and execution plan for the project.
  • Lead a multidisciplinary team of engineers through influence and mentorship, engaging across various levels and groups within Asarco, to drive good practice for project management.
  • Guide engineering schedule development and review outputs ensuring alignment with other engineering disciplines and overall project requirements. Review the engineering staffing plan to support the schedule.
  • Develop and implement a strategy to expedite and track progress for design and procurement activities.
  • Present updates to project sponsors and external business partners as needed.
  • Coordinate budgeting & cost control for all deliverables.
  • Ensure compliance with company policies and industry regulations.
  • Coordinate with Procurement, Construction, Commissioning, Operations, and other functional groups to develop and maintain execution alignment.
  • Proactively identify new technologies and processes that will optimize equipment selection through value engineering and optimize project cost.
  • Contribute to project engineering risk assessments, HAZOPs, design reviews, value optimizations, and construction reviews guiding inputs. Raise safety awareness and ensure the corporate design for safety principles are applied to the project.
  • Collaborate with internal and external teams in the execution of the project.
  • Perform other duties as requested.

What You Bring
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree (or higher) in Engineering or a related technical discipline, with a minimum of 15 years of progressive experience in project and construction management within heavy industrial or mining environments; OR
  • High school diploma with a minimum of 20 years of progressive experience in large-scale project and construction management, including demonstrated leadership of engineering functions..

Required Competencies
  • Proven experience managing multidisciplinary engineering teams.
  • Extensive experience in heavy industry capital projects covering multiple technical disciplines.
  • Strong knowledge of engineering standards, project controls, cost estimating, scheduling, and risk management.
  • Demonstrated leadership, mentoring, and cross-functional collaboration capabilities.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to engage effectively at all organizational levels.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications.
  • Ability to manage competing priorities in a complex, fast-paced project environment.
  • Strong commitment to safety leadership and operational excellence.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Registered Professional Engineer (PE).
  • Experience in metal mining operations, including knowledge of hydrometallurgy and concentrating processes.
  • Experience working with EPC/EPCM delivery models.
  • Proficiency with engineering and plant design software platforms.
  • Demonstrated experience evaluating and implementing new engineering technologies and methodologies.
