Job Description: Elementary School Teacher Intern

This is a one-year role to prepare a future JICS teacher for the role of Classroom Teacher at a James Irwin Elementary School the following year.

Pay Range:

• Training Year: $30,000

Time Requirements:

• Salary position; Plan for extended hours; Exempt from overtime pay
• 191 day calendar year
• (6-8 weeks of vacation starting at the end of May and ending at the end of July)

Education Requirement:

• Must have a Bachelor’s Degree OR
• Must pass the Praxis tests 5205 and 5901 to apply

This is the role the Teacher Intern is training to perform the following school year as an independent Classroom Teacher. There is no guarantee that a Teacher Intern will be hired as a Classroom Teacher if the necessary skills have not been developed during their internship year. The expectation is that the Teacher Intern will display initiative to gain the skills needed and be ready for the responsibilities of a Classroom Teacher. James Irwin Elementary Schools : Teacher Job Description

General definition: A teacher at James Irwin Charter Elementary School should be an energetic elementary school Teacher (K-5) who is strong in teamwork and communication skills; who effectively uses Direct Instruction curricula and applies these methods for teaching to all the Core Knowledge subjects for that grade level or levels; who uses the Effective Teaching Cycle in fulfilling the coverage of Colorado Academic Standards. The teacher will need to give clear, sequential instruction; understand early academic needs appropriate to the grade level(s) to be taught; cooperate and collaborate with the Instructional Coaches, Assistant Principal and Principal in all areas of teaching and professionalism; demonstrate the ability to motivate and encourage young students; work cheerfully with administration, staff, students, and parents to fulfill the mission of the school. The Teacher will also work cooperatively in grade-level teams and will give direction to an Instructional Assistant (IA) who will assist in the classroom in teaching, monitoring, and supporting activities as assigned by the Teacher.
The Teacher works closely with the administration (Principal, Assistant Principal, Teacher Trainers, Lead Teachers) of the James Irwin Charter Elementary School to implement and deliver Direct Instruction and teach the Core Knowledge Sequence in effective and positive ways. The Teacher supports James Irwin Charter Elementary School’s mission and vision. The Teacher maintains impeccable professionalism in all communication, dress, comportment, and interactions. Teachers report to the Principal of James Irwin Charter Elementary School. Position assignments may be adjusted or changed by the Principal.
Primary Duties:

• Mission & Vision: supports and maintains the Mission and Vision of James Irwin Charter Schools.

• Teaching:
• Creates a friendly and encouraging atmosphere for students and uses positive, structured classroom management techniques;
• Implements the teaching techniques and methods identified by the Principal and Assistant Principal, or others assigned to help with coaching;
• Teaches Direct Instruction reading, math, spelling, and handwriting, and uses the same techniques in teaching any of the Core Knowledge Sequence topics where there is no Direct Instruction script;
• Teaches all of the assigned Core Knowledge topics (unless some CK topics are modified or eliminated by the Principal or Asst. Principal);
• Seeks to implement the approved Colorado Assessment Standards;
• Takes full responsibility for preparation of student materials needed for instruction;
• Follows the daily schedules approved by the Principal;
• Makes appropriate adjustments for students with special accommodations and modifications, including needs for Special Education or Response to Intervention (IEPs, ILPs, RtI plans, and 504s);
• Includes teaching Character Education, which includes honesty, integrity, respect, responsibility, and excellence; Character First
• Training & Collaboration:
• Participates in and implements the professional development provided by the administrators;
• Responds positively to and quickly implements guidance, direction, and coaching provided by school leadership: Principal, Assistant Principal, Teacher Trainers, Lead Teachers;
• Provides positive guidance for any Instructional Assistant, teaching intern, or parent volunteer who is assisting in the class;
• Demonstrates leadership in maintaining a positive collegial relationship with other staff.
• Assessment
• Monitors each student’s progress using data-driven decisions for determining mastery of the subject;
• Assists with the proctoring and administration of any quarterly and formal assessments as assigned;
• Monitors student progress data needed for MTSS (Multi-Tiered Systems of Support) plans as appropriate, and participates in meetings where these plans are being developed;
• Professionalism:
• Models positive character traits such as honesty, integrity, respect, responsibility, and excellence;
• Maintains professional integrity in regards to personal student information, family confidentiality and privacy, and state testing;
• Attends school meetings and conferences as required, including occasional evening meetings, (e.g., Back To School Night, Parent-Teacher meetings, etc.);
• Completes other assigned tasks appropriate to the school setting (recess, etc.);
• Communication:
• Maintains close and positive communication with parents (informal conversations, Learning Plans, emails and phone calls returned within 24 hours);
• Helps write monthly grade level newsletters, monthly Character Trait nominations, quarterly Character Pillar nominations;
• Communicates appropriately and promptly to school leadership and other entities when students’ well-being is in jeopardy, following Colorado Department of Education mandates.
