What Are Different Kinds of Editing Jobs?

There are several different categories of editing jobs, including developmental editing, copy editing, and proofreading. There are also visual editing jobs, such as film or television editing. All of these jobs come with different responsibilities and duties. As a developmental editor, for example, you work closely with an author or writer to flesh out a novel or book. You read rough drafts and provide extensive notes and constructive criticism about character development, narrative structure, and other elements, and assist the writer to publish the manuscript.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Editor, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Editor, you need strong language proficiency, attention to detail, and a solid understanding of grammar, style guides, and editorial standards, often supported by a degree in English, journalism, or communications. Familiarity with editing software like Adobe InCopy, Microsoft Word's track changes, and content management systems is typically required. Excellent communication, time management, and collaboration skills help editors work effectively with writers and other stakeholders. These competencies ensure content accuracy, consistency, and quality, which are crucial for maintaining publication standards and audience trust.

What are some common challenges editors face when working with multiple writers on a project?

Editors who collaborate with multiple writers often encounter challenges such as maintaining a consistent tone and style across different sections, ensuring deadlines are met by all contributors, and managing varying skill levels or writing approaches. Effective communication and clear editorial guidelines are essential to streamline the process. Editors may also need to provide constructive feedback and mediate creative differences to produce a cohesive final product.

What is editing and what does an editor do?

Editing is the process of reviewing and revising content to improve clarity, accuracy, and overall quality before publication or distribution. An editor checks for grammar, spelling, punctuation, and consistency, and may also reorganize sections to enhance flow and readability. Depending on the field, editors may work on books, articles, videos, or other media, collaborating closely with writers and creators to ensure the final product meets professional standards.

What jobs can you do with editing?

Editing skills can lead to jobs such as copy editor, content editor, video editor, technical editor, and proofreader. These roles involve reviewing and improving written or visual content for clarity, accuracy, and style, often requiring proficiency with editing software and strong attention to detail.

What is the difference between Editing vs Copywriting?

AspectEditingCopywriting
Primary FocusReviewing and refining content for clarity, accuracy, and styleCreating persuasive content to promote products or services

While both editing and copywriting involve writing skills, editing focuses on improving existing content for clarity and correctness, whereas copywriting aims to craft compelling messages to persuade or inform audiences.

Job description

At Netflix, our mission is to entertain the world. Together, we are writing the next episode - pushing the boundaries of storytelling, global fandom and making the unimaginable a reality. We are a dream team obsessed with the uncomfortable excitement of discovering what happens when you merge creativity, intuition and cutting-edge technology. Come be a part of what's next.

We're seeking a highly-skilled Senior Tools & Build Engineer to join an in-house development team building an innovative Unreal Engine title. In this role, you will own and evolve our core tools and build ecosystem-with a particular focus on Tools and Unreal editor extensions - as well as our Horde, Unreal Game Sync (UGS), and Cloud DDC infrastructure.

You will take end-to-end ownership of designing, implementing, and maintaining tools and pipelines that power how our developers build, sync, cook, and ship the game.

THE TEAM

We're a small, scrappy team with big ambitions and an obsession to deliver memorable, innovative gameplay combined with beloved IPs, served seamlessly within the Netflix streaming ecosystem. We're looking for new teammates who care deeply about the experiences they create and the people they make them with, who are biased towards action, and are energized by the learning that comes with bold experimentation at an agile pace. As part of Netflix, we strive to hire the best and value integrity, excellence, respect, inclusion, and collaboration.
RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Build & CI/CD Owner:
Configure, maintain, and scale our Horde build farm and CI/CD pipelines for Unreal (editor, client, server, tools). Ensure fast, reliable, and reproducible builds across platforms. Integrate automated tests and validation steps to catch issues early and keep the mainline healthy.

  • UGS & Workflow Champion:
Administer and evolve Unreal Game Sync (UGS)-streams, project definitions, and build configs-while surfacing UGS information clearly inside your C# tools and editor UIs. Improve developer workflows with preflight checks, changelist health indicators, and frictionless sync/build flows.

  • Cloud DDC Steward:
Maintain Cloud DDC infrastructure. Optimize configuration, caching policies, and monitoring to minimize cook/compile times and maximize iteration speed. Build dashboards and diagnostics that make DDC behavior visible and understandable to the team.

  • Tools Architect & Implementer:
Design, build, and maintain Standalone Tools and Unreal editor extensions (Slate/UMG) that streamline everyday workflows

THE IDEAL CANDIDATE

  • Has 5+ years of progressively complex, related experience as a Tools Engineer, Build Engineer, or similar role in the games industry, ideally on Unreal projects.

  • Demonstrates deep expertise in Unreal Engine (UE4/UE5), particularly:

    • Unreal build and cook pipeline (UBT/UAT, cooking, packaging, deployment).

    • Editor extensibility with Slate and UMG (custom panels, tools, workflows).

    • Integrating editor/engine features with external tools and services.

  • Has strong C# development experience, including:

    • Building and maintaining desktop tools (e.g., WPF).

    • Designing intuitive, performant UIs for technical workflows.

    • Architecting maintainable, testable tools that can evolve with project needs.

  • Has hands-on production experience setting up and maintaining:

    • Horde build infrastructure (agents, queues, orchestration, scaling).

    • Unreal Game Sync (UGS) (streams, project definitions, build integration).

  • Cloud DDC (configuration, deployment, tuning, monitoring).

    • Is comfortable with Perforce at scale: depot layout, streams, branching strategies, workspace management, and basic server-side administration.

    • Has solid scripting/programming skills beyond C# (e.g., Python, PowerShell, Bash), especially for automation and pipeline glue.

    • Understands CI/CD practices and has experience with systems like Jenkins, TeamCity, GitHub Actions, or Azure DevOps for Unreal-based projects.

    • Thrives as part of a cross-functional multidisciplinary team, communicating clearly with both technical and non-technical partners.

    • Works effectively remote or on-site, managing time and priorities across shared projects.

REQUIRED APPLICATION MATERIALS

  • Resume

LOCATION

  • Los Angeles preferred

  • Will consider remote applicants who are willing to travel for work-related events and work a PST-oriented dev team schedule.
