QC Lab Chemist - 3rd shift
Classification: Hourly Non-Exempt
Reports to: QC Lab Manager
Summary/Objective
The QC Lab Chemist will have sufficient educational and laboratory experience to perform both wet chemistry and instrumental laboratory analyses. This position is responsible for testing raw materials, in-process samples, and finished products to ensure compliance with specifications and quality standards. Must be proficient in analytical chemistry principles, operation of analytical instrumentation and common laboratory equipment, laboratory documentation practices, and quality system requirements.
The successful candidate will support manufacturing operations through timely analytical testing, accurate reporting of results, adherence to Good Documentation Practices (GDP), and compliance with company safety and quality standards.
Essential Functions
  • Perform laboratory analysis of raw materials, in-process samples, and finished products according to approved procedures and specifications. Support the disposition and release process based on these analyses.
  • Generate and maintain raw material and finished product identification labels and related records.
  • Operate analytical instruments, including (but not limited to):
    • Gas Chromatographs (GC)
    • High-Performance Liquid Chromatographs (HPLC)
    • Auto-Titrators
    • Karl Fischer Titrators
    • Viscometers
    • Furnaces
    • Drying Ovens
    • Other common laboratory instrumentation
  • Perform routine instrument calibrations, performance checks, preventative maintenance, and troubleshooting activities as needed.
  • Prepare reagents, standards, and laboratory solutions as required.
  • Accurately record, review, and report laboratory data in written and electronic systems.
  • Follow Good Documentation Practices (GDP) and data integrity requirements when generating, recording, reviewing, and reporting analytical results.
  • Perform acid/base titrations and other wet chemistry analysis.
  • Calculate molarity, normality, equivalents, concentrations, dilutions, and other laboratory calculations.
  • Support investigations involving out-of-specification (OOS) results, laboratory deviations, atypical results, and customer complaints as assigned.
  • Follow approved Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), test methods, safety procedures, and quality policies.
  • Maintain laboratory records, notebooks, electronic files, and sample archives in accordance with company requirements.
  • Work closely with manufacturing supervisors, operators, engineers, and laboratory personnel to provide analytical support to production processes.
  • Maintain laboratory organization and cleanliness in accordance with 5S principles.
  • Assist with inventory management of laboratory chemicals, standards, consumables, and supplies.
  • Participate in training, continuous improvement initiatives, audits, and quality system activities.
  • Perform additional laboratory responsibilities as assigned by the QC Manager.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Knowledge of analytical chemistry principles and laboratory practices.
  • Ability to perform wet chemistry testing and laboratory calculations.
  • Ability to operate, calibrate, and troubleshoot laboratory instrumentation.
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to data accuracy.
  • Good organizational, planning, and time-management skills.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently following completion of training.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications and electronic laboratory documentation systems.

Supervisory Responsibility
This position has no supervisory responsibilities.
Work Environment
This position works primarily in a climate-controlled chemical laboratory located within a manufacturing facility.
While performing the duties of this job, the employee may be exposed to:
  • Chemical vapors and airborne particles
  • Corrosive chemicals including high and low pH materials
  • Flammable and combustible materials
  • Moving mechanical equipment
  • Elevated noise levels

The employee must comply with all company safety requirements, chemical handling procedures, and personal protective equipment (PPE) requirements. Tasks may require the use of respiratory protection, including fit-tested full-face respirators, as determined by the work activity and hazard assessment.
Physical Demands
While performing the duties of this position, the employee is regularly required to:
  • Stand and walk for extended periods.
  • Use hands and arms to handle laboratory equipment and samples.
  • Reach, bend, stoop, kneel, crouch, and climb stairs.
  • Lift laboratory supplies and sample containers within established company guidelines.
  • Distinguish colors and observe detailed analytical results.
  • Wear required PPE including safety glasses, chemical-resistant gloves, hearing protection, steel-toe footwear, face shields, and respiratory protection when required.

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work
This is a full-time position.
  • Standard schedule consists of five (5) eight-hour workdays per week if assigned to 1st or 2nd shift, and four (4) ten-hour workdays per week if assigned to 3rd (night) shift.
  • During training period, typical schedule is day shift unless otherwise assigned by management.
  • Overtime, call-in work, weekend work, holiday coverage, and schedule adjustments may be required to support business and production needs.
  • Schedule requirements may vary based on operational demands.

Travel
No travel is expected for this position.
Required Education and Experience
  • Associate degree in Chemistry, Chemical Technology, Physical Science, or related scientific discipline OR
  • Minimum three (3) years of experience working in a manufacturing quality control laboratory may be considered in lieu of degree.
  • Strong mathematical and analytical skills.

Preferred Education and Experience
  • Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry, Physical Science, or related scientific discipline.
  • Two (2) or more years of analytical laboratory experience.

    • HPLC
    • GC
    • Wet chemistry techniques
    • Manufacturing quality systems
    • Electronic laboratory data management systems
