The annual base salary range provided for this position is a nationwide market range and represents a broad range of salaries for this role across the country. The actual salary for this position will be determined by a number of factors, including the scope, complexity and location of the role; the skills, education, training, credentials and experience of the candidate; and other conditions of employment. As part of our comprehensive compensation and benefits program, employees are also eligible for performance-based cash incentive awards.

What Is the Opportunity?
This position reports into the National Practice Lead as a strategic leader over a broad regional and / or product-specific segment of the portfolio delivering scalable strategic leadership and impact to the organization. In addition, incumbent works with respective Managing Directors and other regional leaders in assigned markets to drive team goals, strategic sales and distribution management and provide underwriting. Responsibilities include developing and maintain relationships with key distributers and customers and collaborating with with regional leadership teams across Business Insurance to achieve business objectives.What Will You Do?

Strategy and Business Results:

  • Provides strategic leadership over large geographic territory and / or product area(s) in partnership with local Ocean Marine leadership and other business partners
  • Develops and maintains relationships with key distributers and customers in partnership with local underwriting team, including leading strategy around distribution management to achieve growth and sales objectives
  • In partnership with local leadership, executes strategic business plans and sets annual plan, adjusting execution strategies on an ongoing basis in response to financial and operational results. Jointly accountable for regional profit and loss results within the assigned regions. Responsible for monitoring field execution for the line or industry segment.

Underwriting and Pricing:

  • Maintains appropriate specialization and awareness of industry trends including attending specialized industry forums, industry boards or bureaus.
  • Jointly accountable with local leadership for the results of the most complex, at risk or hard to close deals as needed for the specialty practices.
  • Informs product strategy for designed line/industry segment.
  • Participates in Portfolio CUREs, assessment of the line/industry, strategic direction.
  • Provides assistance in obtaining corporate support for underwriting needs required in assigned jurisdictions.

Talent Management:

  • Maintains an active and collaborative partnership with Regional Vice Presidents and HR around recruiting plans and staff development in order to attract and retain top talent. Works closely with leaders on developing bench strength for key positions.
  • Staff management functions include, but not limited to, coaching, training, developing and performance management feedback in a supportive, team-oriented, collaborative manner.
  • Builds and maintains valued internal business partnerships within Business Insurance, the Enterprise, and external constituencies as appropriate.

Distribution and Sales Management:

  • Engages with key distribution agents and specialists directly for the specialty practice on behalf of Travelers.
  • Collaborates with local leadership on Distribution and Agency Management to optimize production results within the Specialty Practice Models, promotes and inspires behaviors inherent to a successful consultative marketing / sales culture.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

  • Bachelor's, MBA or Master's degree.
  • Typically has 10+ years of relevant experience.
  • Strong general management background with P & L accountability.

  • Exhibits a thorough understanding of global and specialty business insurance trends, industry/customer-based trends and enterprise wide business and financial drivers that affect the region.

Product Knowledge:

  • Manages to organizational and regulatory rules, policies and procedures specific to the assigned specialty practice.
  • Maintains a thorough knowledge of enterprise and industry/line specific products and services.
  • Demonstrated ability to influence and execute strategy.
  • Proven ability to influence change and operate strategically in a matrix organization structure.

  • 10 years of underwriting experience.
