What does a disability attorney do?

As a disability attorney, you represent clients who want to claim disability benefits from their disability insurance or social security. One of your main responsibilities is to help your clients win their claim or appeal to receive disability insurance coverage, supplemental security income (SSI), or social security disability income (SSDI). Your job duties include client consultations, case research, and hearings before an administrative law judge. You may charge a contingency fee to handle cases. You need the same qualifications as any practicing lawyer to pursue a career as a disability attorney. You need excellent negotiation and communication skills.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a disability attorney, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Disability Attorney, you need a Juris Doctor (JD) degree, state bar admission, and deep knowledge of disability and Social Security law. Familiarity with legal research databases, case management software, and e-filing systems is typically required. Outstanding advocacy, empathy, and strong written and verbal communication skills help attorneys effectively represent and support clients with disabilities. These skills and qualities are crucial for navigating complex legal processes and ensuring clients receive the benefits and protections they deserve.

What are some typical challenges disability attorneys face when representing clients, and how can applicants prepare for them?

Disability Attorneys often encounter challenges such as navigating complex government regulations, managing large caseloads, and advocating for clients with diverse medical and personal backgrounds. Applicants should be prepared to handle detailed documentation, tight deadlines, and emotionally charged situations. Building strong communication and organizational skills, as well as staying current on Social Security and disability law, can help attorneys succeed in this field.

What is the difference between Disability Attorney vs Social Security Disability Claims Specialist?

Disability AttorneySocial Security Disability Claims Specialist
Legal degree and license to practice lawTypically no law degree; specialized training in SSD claims
Handles legal representation and appealsAssists clients with application processes and documentation
Works in law firms or legal settingsOften employed by government agencies or disability service organizations
Focuses on legal rights and advocacyFocuses on claim submission and procedural guidance

While both roles assist individuals with SSD claims, a Disability Attorney provides legal representation and handles appeals, whereas a Social Security Disability Claims Specialist offers support with application processes and documentation. Their work environments and credentials differ, but both aim to help clients secure disability benefits effectively.

About Thomas J. Henry Law

Thomas J. Henry Law is one of Texas’s most recognized personal injury trial firms — in practice since 1993, roughly 200 attorneys, and a statewide platform built on preparing every case as if it will go to trial. We are in the middle of an ambitious growth transformation: a formal PI Academy for attorney development, senior-lawyer-led practice pods, meritocratic advancement tiers, and a professional operating spine. We’re hiring a dedicated internal recruiting team to bring the best plaintiff attorney talent in Texas to that platform.

The Role

This is not a job-board-posting, resume-forwarding role. You are a hunter. Your job is to identify, engage, court, and close the attorneys who make our firm win at trial - from first-year associates to seasoned litigators with their own trial records, most of whom are currently employed and not actively looking. You’ll own a portfolio of Texas markets, build a living map of the attorney talent in them, and run a full-cycle pipeline from sourcing through offer acceptance and first-day landing.

What You’ll Do
  • Build and maintain a proprietary map of plaintiff/PI attorney talent across your markets — trial experience, practice focus, tenure, and likely motivators.
  • Proactively source and engage passive candidates through direct outreach, referrals, bar events, and local attorney groups — not by waiting on inbound applications.
  • Own full-cycle recruiting: sourcing, first contact, screening, selling the opportunity, interview coordination, references and conflicts checks, offer support, close, and 30/60/90-day landing.
  • Develop referral pipelines and build relationships with current TJH attorneys and law school alumni.
  • Partner with practice-group and pod leaders to define role scorecards and calibrate candidate quality.
  • Track pipeline health and report weekly on activity, funnel conversion, time-to-fill, offer-acceptance rate, and quality-of-hire.
  • Represent the firm’s growth story — the Academy, the career path, the pod model — credibly to skeptical, high-performing candidates.
What You Bring
  • 3+ years of full-cycle recruiting experience — ideally in legal, professional services, or high-volume sales/executive search. Legal recruiting or agency search experience is strongly preferred.
  • A demonstrated track record of sourcing and closing passive candidates, not just processing inbound applicants.
  • Fluency with modern ATS/CRM and sourcing tools (LinkedIn Recruiter,Indeed Smart Sourcing,Boolean sourcing, bar-directory research).
  • Exceptional relationship, persuasion, and closing skills — you can hold your own with a senior litigator.
  • High activity tolerance and a metric-driven, competitive mindset. You like a scoreboard. Willing to travel across Texas markets and work some evenings/events.
  • Familiarity with the Texas legal market and PI practice a strong plus. Bilingual (English/Spanish) a plus given our client base and markets.
Why This Role
  • Uncapped incentive tied to placements and retention — your production drives your pay.
  • You’re building the pipeline for a firm every Texas lawyer already knows, now it’s professionalizing its entire attorney experience.
  • Real infrastructure behind you: a growth transformation with executive sponsorship, budget, and a defined operating model — not a lone-wolf assignment.
  • Paid vacation, holidays, and leave
  • 401(k) with 4% match (immediate vesting)
  • Dental, vision, and supplemental insurance
  • Relocation assistance
  • Bar dues paid (first 3 years)
  • Career advancement and leadership opportunities
  • Gym membership and Employee Recognition Programs
  • Regular company events and community involvement

Thomas J. Henry Law is an Equal Opportunity Employer.
