Job description

Director Surgical Services

The Director of Surgical Services is responsible for planning, directing, and coordinating the full spectrum of surgical patient care. This includes all clinical and nursing care in surgical preparation units, operating rooms, and post-anesthesia care units. The role directs, organizes, and evaluates all patient care services provided in pre-operative, intra-operative, and post-operative surgical areas. Responsibilities include the cleanliness and safety of surgical environments, control of medications, and management of surgical instruments. Establishes and communicates the clinical goals and objectives for assigned surgical units. Develops and implements surgical services policies, procedures, and practices. Maintains and monitors clinical operational efficiency, standards of care, and patient service delivery levels. Negotiates interdepartmental resources and communicates with other clinical departments for effective delivery of surgical care. The Director translates and implements strategic plans and objectives for the area of responsibility. Makes final decisions on operational matters to ensure achievement of objectives. Recommends policies and organizational changes for the area. Plans and executes projects and initiatives to meet annual objectives. Plans and directs the operations of a department, with responsibility for staffing, processes, budgets, and costs. Leads and advises subordinate(s) to meet schedules, resolve technical problems, and monitor performance. Key success factors include leading development activities for new and existing surgical services. Monitoring, reviewing, and benchmarking outcomes in surgical care areas. Developing and implementing education and training for surgical services staff on clinical and leadership competencies. Ensuring compliance with all applicable legal and regulatory requirements. Developing surgical services dashboards measuring productivity, patient satisfaction, throughput, quality, efficiency, and effectiveness. Facilitating opportunities to participate in research related to surgical services.
