Job description

JOB TITLE: Surgical Technician
BUSINESS UNIT: UVP
DEPARTMENT: DLV
REPORTS TO: Surgical Tech Manager
FLSA STATUS: Non-Exempt

SUMMARY
The Surgical Technician plays a critical role in the operating room by ensuring that all surgical equipment is prepared, sterilized, and functioning properly prior to each procedure. This role anticipates the needs of the surgeon, maintains an efficient and safe operating environment, and supports optimal patient outcomes with minimal supervision.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Provide direct support during ophthalmic surgeries, anticipating surgeon needs and assisting in procedures.
  • Organize and maintain daily operating room operations in compliance with federal, state, accreditation, and facility standards.
  • Oversee and maintain surgical supply inventory, including ordering diagnostic medications and supplies.
  • Clean, inspect, and sterilize surgical instruments; arrange for repair or replacement as needed.
  • Prepare and set up laser rooms with required sterile supplies and equipment.
  • Perform routine and emergency maintenance of medical and surgical equipment.
  • Assist with patient education, post-operative instructions, and medication administration as directed.
  • Demonstrate flexibility by supporting different clinical areas as needed.
  • Collaborate with the OR team in training new staff and sharing expertise.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY
This position does not have supervisory responsibility.
JOB QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE
  • High school diploma or equivalent required
  • Minimum of two (2) to three (3) years of experience as a Surgical Technician in ophthalmology or another surgical specialty required
  • Demonstrated knowledge of eye anatomy, ocular diseases, and ophthalmic surgical procedures (including cataract and LASIK)
  • Experience with surgical instruments, lasers, and ophthalmic medications required

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS
Certification as a Surgical Technologist (CST) preferred
