Job description

Surgical Technologist

Tareen Dermatology is seeking a full-time Surgical Technologist to support our providers in delivering exceptional medical and surgical dermatology care. In this role, you will assist with dermatologic procedures, prepare patients and surgical suites, maintain sterile technique, and help ensure a safe, efficient, and compassionate patient experience. This position requires travel between our Roseville, MN and Hudson, WI clinic locations as needed.

Education and Experience

Bachelor's Degree Preferred.

Successful completion of an accredited Surgical Technologist program is required.

Current Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) credential through the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA) preferred or required (depending on your organization's policy).

Previous medical field experience or science-based education required.

Additional Preferred Qualifications

Previous dermatology, surgical, or Mohs surgery experience preferred.

Previous experience assisting with sterile procedures or surgical cases preferred.

Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required (or obtained within 90 days of hire).

Demonstrated knowledge of sterile technique, infection prevention, and surgical instrumentation preferred.

Required Skills/Abilities

Proficient in typing, spelling, punctuation, grammar, and oral communication.

Ability to manage multiple priorities.

Knowledge of anatomy and medical terminology.

Organizational skills with focus on tracking patient care and improving patient flow.

Professional demeanor and recognition of privacy considerations for patients and families.

Detail oriented.

Ability to follow oral and written instructions.

Strong computer skills.

Ability to work well independently and as part of a team.

Responsibilities

Accurately document patient encounters in the electronic medical record (EMR) by scribing for the treating provider and maintaining complete, timely, and compliant medical records.

Prepare patients for examinations by obtaining and documenting medical histories, reviewing medications and allergies, assessing chief complaints, and ensuring patients are ready for evaluation.

Assist providers during examinations, diagnostic testing, and medical or surgical procedures by preparing equipment and supplies, anticipating provider needs, and ensuring patient safety and comfort throughout the visit.

Prepares procedure rooms before surgery by ensuring all surgical instruments, supplies, medications, and equipment are available, sterile, and functioning properly.

Establishes and maintains sterile fields utilizing aseptic technique and infection prevention standards.

Assists the surgeon during procedures by anticipating procedural needs and passing instruments, supplies, and medications while maintaining sterile technique.

Assists with patient positioning, preparation, draping, and comfort before, during, and after surgical procedures.

Performs surgical site preparation in accordance with physician orders and established clinical protocols.

Prepares, labels, and transports tissue specimens according to established pathology and laboratory procedures while maintaining proper chain of custody.

Assists with wound closure procedures by preparing suture materials, dressings, and equipment and assisting the physician during layered closures and reconstructive procedures within scope of practice.

Applies postoperative dressings and provides patients with post-procedure instructions as directed by the physician.

Monitors patients throughout procedures for comfort and reports changes in patient condition to the physician immediately.

Cleans, disinfects, and prepares surgical instruments for sterilization and maintains compliance with sterilization, infection prevention, OSHA, and CDC guidelines.

Performs routine quality assurance activities related to surgical equipment, sterilization logs, and inventory management.

Maintains adequate inventory of surgical instruments, medications, supplies, and emergency equipment; communicates inventory needs to management.

Assists in maintaining compliance with OSHA, HIPAA, infection control, and safety standards applicable to surgical services.

Coordinates patient flow throughout the surgical day to promote efficiency while maintaining exceptional patient care and communication.

Provides compassionate education to patients regarding procedures, wound care, medications, and postoperative expectations.

Communicate laboratory and pathology test results to patients in a timely, accurate, and compassionate manner, following provider instructions and clinic protocols.

Train, mentor, and support new employees to promote competency, consistency, and adherence to clinic standards and workflows.

Maintain a working knowledge of clinic services to educate patients, answer basic questions, and coordinate appropriate referrals or consultations within the practice.

Educate patients on procedures, review informed consent documents, and obtain all required signed consents, including procedural and medical photography/media consents, prior to treatment.

Travels to alternate clinic locations as needed to support surgical services.

Performs other duties as assigned.
