What is a dental surgical tech?

A Dental Surgical Tech assists dentists and oral surgeons during surgical procedures, ensuring a sterile environment and proper instrument setup. Their duties include sterilizing tools, preparing patients, assisting during surgeries, and handling post-operative care instructions. They also help with administrative tasks like maintaining patient records and ordering supplies. This role requires knowledge of dental instruments, surgical procedures, and infection control. Training typically includes a dental assisting program and hands-on experience in surgical settings.

What does a dental surgical tech do?

A typical day for a Dental Surgical Tech involves preparing and sterilizing surgical instruments, assisting the oral surgeon during procedures, and ensuring that the operating area remains sterile and organized. You may also be responsible for reviewing patient charts, assisting with anesthesia administration, and providing post-operative care instructions to patients. The role often includes collaborating closely with dental assistants, hygienists, and administrative staff to deliver seamless patient care. Flexibility and teamwork are essential, as the day can include a mix of routine extractions, dental implant placements, and emergency procedures.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a dental surgical tech?

Dental Surgical Techs need a background in dental assisting or surgical technology, with strong knowledge of oral surgery procedures, sterilization protocols, and dental anatomy. Certification as a Dental Assistant (such as CDA) or completion of an accredited surgical technology program, along with familiarity with dental instruments and digital imaging systems, is highly valued. Attention to detail, ability to remain calm under pressure, and excellent teamwork and communication skills help professionals excel in this field. These abilities ensure patient safety, support efficient surgical procedures, and contribute to a positive, collaborative clinic environment.

Is it hard to get hired as a dental surgical tech?

Getting hired as a dental surgical tech can be competitive, but having relevant certifications, such as DANB certification, and hands-on experience can improve job prospects. Employers often seek candidates with strong technical skills, attention to detail, and the ability to work efficiently in a dental office environment.
