Job description

Certified Surgical Assistant

Sentara Obici Hospital is seeking a skilled Certified Surgical Assistant to join our dynamic surgical services department. Working under the direct supervision of the attending surgeon, you will serve as a 1st or 2nd assistant, supporting multidisciplinary surgical teams to ensure optimal patient outcomes before, during, and after surgical procedures.

Key Responsibilities
  • Intraoperative Assistance: Assist surgeons by providing tissue retraction, visualizing the operative site, cauterizing bleeding vessels, and applying appropriate surgical dressings, splints, and casts.
  • Surgical Suturing: Perform wound closure and suturing of incisions under the direct supervision and guidelines of the attending physician.
  • Preparation & Positioning: Anticipate the needs of the surgical team by selecting appropriate equipment, setting up tables, and safely positioning patients for procedures.
  • Medication Administration: Assist with the instillation of medications as directed by the surgeon.
  • Pre & Post-Operative Duties: Complete necessary pre-operative patient preparations and assist with post-operative care and interdisciplinary communication.
  • Safety & Compliance: Strictly adhere to infection control protocols, hospital policies, and regulatory guidelines to maintain a sterile, safe OR environment.
Qualifications & Requirements
  • Education: Graduate of an accredited Surgical Assistant program.
  • Certification: Certified Surgical First Assistant (CSFA) through the NBSTSA OR Certified Surgical Assistant (CSA) through the NCCSA.
  • Licensure: Valid Virginia Surgical Assistant License.
  • Life Support: Basic Life Support (BLS) certification from the American Heart Association (AHA).
  • Experience: Minimum of 1 year of Operating Room experience preferred, though new graduates may apply for entry-level tiers.
  • On-Call Availability: Must reside within 30 minutes of the hospital location for on-call purposes (requires rotating weekday overnight and weekend on-call shifts).
