Surgical Technician

Responsibilities:
Surgical Technician duties will consist of, but are not limited to:

  • Secure and prepare all supplies required for surgical intervention.
  • Ensure the preparation and maintenance of the sterile field in OR.
  • Perform surgical counts according to center policies and procedures.
  • Prepare patient skin for surgical treatment.
  • Help monitor patients during surgery.
  • Provide supportive care during the pre-operative phase.
  • Perform surgical functions to assist surgeon during surgical procedure.
  • Collect and label specimens taken during surgical procedure.
  • Follow all federal, state, and departmental safety procedures.
  • Maintain a proper sterile field during surgical procedures.
  • Provide technical assistance to surgeons, surgical nurses, or anesthesiologists.
  • Prepare patients for surgery, including positioning patients on the operating table and covering them with sterile surgical drapes to prevent exposure.
  • Hand instruments and supplies to surgeons and surgeons' assistants, hold retractors, and cut sutures, and perform other tasks as directed by surgeon during operation.
  • Prepare, care for, and dispose of tissue specimens.
  • Wash and sterilize equipment, using proper products and sterilizing techniques per manufacturers guidelines.
  • Monitor and continually assess operating room conditions, including patient and surgical team needs.
  • Operate, assemble, adjust, or monitor sterilizers, lights, suction machines, or diagnostic equipment to ensure proper operation.
  • Disinfect all the equipment and tools used after the surgery.
  • Assist with Cleaning and turnover of the operating room after the procedure.

  • Proactive: Anticipate needs of the surgical staff and patient.
  • Reactive: Provide accurate and timely assistance to match the urgency and necessity of the situation.
  • Problem Sensitivity: Able to tell when something needs to be corrected.
  • Steadiness: Able to keep your hand and arm steady when needed.

Qualifications:

  • Orthopedic experience is required.
  • 2+ years' experience preferred.
  • Adheres to AORN guidelines.
  • Certification through a CAAHEP accredited program preferred.
  • BLS certification.
  • Familiarity with all surgical instruments and equipment.
  • Able to lift 50 lbs.
  • Working knowledge of sterile and aseptic technique.
