A Director Software Engineer at a startup leads and manages the engineering team, overseeing the development and delivery of software products. They set technical direction, ensure best practices, and collaborate closely with founders and other departments to align technology with business goals. This role often involves hands-on coding, mentoring junior engineers, and making key architectural decisions. Directors at startups must be adaptable, balancing strategic planning with the fast-paced demands of startup growth.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a director software engineer at a startup?

To thrive as a Director Software Engineer at a startup, you need deep expertise in software architecture, coding best practices, and team leadership, often supported by a degree in computer science and significant engineering experience. Job description

Who is Prescryptive?

Prescryptive is the healthcare technology company enabling the direct access marketplace for prescription drugs. Our platform aligns incentives so affordability, choice, and patient access become the natural outcome of a functioning system. Learn more about us by following us on LinkedInor visiting Prescryptive.com.

About this role

As a Director, Software Engineering, you will lead a domain within our engineering organization. You are accountable for the health of the systems your domain owns, the quality and durability of the team's technical decisions, and the growth and effectiveness of the engineers you lead. You will set direction for your domain, create clarity for engineers and partners, and ensure the team is focused on the problems that matter most.

We are hiring three Directors of Software Engineering to lead distinct product and platform domains: Consumer Experience, B2B Products & Portals, and Backend Platforms & Services. Each role shares the same leadership expectations, but the technical emphasis will vary by domain. We are looking for leaders with deep experience in at least one of these areas, not all three.

You will work directly with engineering leadership, product leaders, technical product managers, and other domain leads to connect technical strategy to business outcomes. The role requires someone who can bring structure to ambiguity, make pragmatic technical decisions, and lead people through complex work with clarity, judgment, and ownership.

The domains we are hiring for

Consumer Experience

  • Lead the engineering team responsible for consumer-facing digital experiences, with a focus on usability, performance, accessibility, and reliable delivery across web and mobile-responsive experiences.

B2B Products and Portals

  • Lead the engineering team responsible for customer, partner, and operational portals, with a focus on complex workflows, enterprise usability, permissions and data access, integrations, and scalable product capabilities.

Backend Platforms and Services

  • Lead the engineering team responsible for core backend services, APIs, data flows, and platform capabilities, with a focus on scalability, reliability, security, performance, and system integration.

What you will do

  • Lead, coach, and develop a team of software engineers, including performance management, feedback, career development, hiring, and team health.
  • Assess and evolve your team's structure, capabilities, and capacity; identify talent gaps and make sound calls on hiring and allocation
  • Own the technical direction, delivery discipline, and operating rhythm for an engineering domain in partnership with product and engineering leadership.
  • Translate business needs into technical priorities, sequencing decisions, and executable plans.
  • Elevate the technical judgment of engineers around you through design reviews, architectural guidance, and mentorship
  • Stay close enough to the code and architecture to guide hard technical tradeoffs, review critical designs, and step into complex problem solving when needed.
  • Ensure the team builds and operates high-quality software from design through production operations, including on-call readiness and incident response
  • Engage directly with product, technical product managers, and executive stakeholders to assess feasibility, cost, risk, and delivery implications of strategic initiatives.
  • Identify overlapping work, cross-team dependencies, architectural risks, and technical debt before they become constraints.
  • Hold the team accountable for commitments, surface delivery risks early, and work with product and engineering partners to adjust scope, sequencing or resources when necessary.

What you will bring

  • 10+ years of software development experience, including accountability for the performance, delivery, and technical outcomes of an engineering team.
  • 3+ years of formal people management leading software engineers, with a genuine passion for coaching and for building teams where engineers do their best work
  • Strong technical depth in at least one relevant engineering domain, with the judgment to go deep when needed and the humility to rely on specialists when appropriate.
  • Experience leading delivery for complex systems that span multiple services, teams, or domains.
  • Strong proficiency in the languages, frameworks, and technologies relevant to the domain you would lead, with the ability to ramp quickly in unfamiliar areas. Our stack includes C#, Go, TypeScript, and React.
  • Proven ability to own the full software development lifecycle, from requirements and design through construction, testing, deployment, and production operations.
  • Strong understanding of the architecture, data flows, APIs, cloud environment, and operational dependencies relevant to the systems your domain owns.
  • You optimize for the right solution given real constraints, not the theoretically perfect one.
  • You create technical alignment across teams with competing priorities and make tradeoffs visible to stakeholders.
  • You hold a high bar without creating unnecessary process.
  • You translate fluently between business language and technical language, in both directions.
  • Enthusiasm for leveraging AI-assisted development tools and emerging technologies.
  • Must have permission to work in the US on a permanent basis.

Ideally you will also have

  • Experience working in healthcare, another regulated industry, or an environment with complex data, security, and compliance requirements.
  • Experience leading through organizational change, scaling engineering practices, or helping a growing engineering team mature its operating model.
  • Depending on domain, relevant experience may include:
    • Healthcare data and integration standards such as HL7, FHIR, EHR, PMS, or PBM integrations;
    • Experience with GraphQL, event-driven systems, APIs, or data pipelines;
    • Design systems, accessibility, frontend performance, or enterprise workflow design; or
    • Infrastructure as code, containerization, observability, and platform engineering at scale.

Application Instructions

Please indicate which domain best matches your experience: Consumer Experience, B2B Products and Portals, or Backend Platforms and Services. Candidates may be considered for more than one domain.

What we have to offer

  • The opportunity to grow alongside an early-stage company shaking up a big, old-fashioned industry.
  • Flexible time off, including 12 paid holidays.
  • 401k match plus 100% employer-provided medical, dental, and vision premiums.
  • Company contribution to Health Savings Account.
  • Stock options.

Prescryptive is committed to fair pay practices. The projected annual salary for this position is $220,000 to $275,000. When preparing an offer, we consider the candidate's experience, depth of technical skills, experience in the healthcare industry, proven leadership success, scope of the assigned domain, interview feedback, internal equity, and location.
