Job description

MISSION (Commander's Intent)

Lead a high-performance maintenance operation that keeps a critical fleet and heavy equipment safe, reliable, and mission-ready. This role ensures all vehicles and assets remain operational -- supporting essential service delivery and the teams who depend on consistent equipment uptime. Success means building a culture where safety, accountability, and technician development are the foundation of every shift.

PERFORMANCE OBJECTIVES (First 12 Months)

  • Fleet Readiness: Achieve 95%+ equipment availability across all fleet assets through proactive maintenance scheduling and rapid repair turnaround.
  • Safety Leadership: Enforce a zero-incident safety standard through daily toolbox talks, disciplined LOTO procedures, and compliance training.
  • Team Development: Coach and develop a team of diesel technicians, fostering cross-training, skill growth, and diagnostic readiness.
  • Operational Excellence: Identify and implement process improvements that reduce unplanned downtime and increase overall shop productivity.
  • Cost Management: Maintain disciplined budget control across labor, parts, and vendor repairs while sustaining high service quality.
  • Compliance & Documentation: Ensure all maintenance records meet applicable federal, state, and internal audit standards.
  • FIT TRAITS (Human Profile)

    • Hands-on, lead-from-the-floor style; earns trust through credibility and presence
    • Views safety and mentorship as core leadership behaviors -- not add-ons
    • Confident diagnosing mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic systems
    • Decisive under pressure; prioritizes people and process equally
    • Communicates clearly across levels -- from technicians to senior leadership
    • Models integrity, respect, and continuous improvement

    WHY THIS ROLE MATTERS

Equipment doesn't fail in a vacuum -- it fails people. The leader in this role is the critical link between operational safety, service reliability, and the community that depends on it. This is not a desk job. It is a leadership role for someone who takes pride in precision, develops technicians who take pride in their work, and understands that a well-run shop is a direct expression of organizational values.

    Requirements

    Required Experience

    • Must have served in the U.S. Army, U.S. Navy, U.S. Marine Corps, U.S. Air Force, U.S. Coast Guard, U.S. Space Force, U.S. Reserves, or U.S. National Guard
    • Proven success managing fleet or heavy-equipment maintenance operations in transportation, industrial, or municipal environments
    • Strong technical background in diesel engines, hydraulics, electrical systems, and diagnostics
    • Demonstrated leadership in technician training, performance management, and culture building

    Preferred Profile

    • Military veterans with senior enlisted or warrant officer backgrounds in motor transport, maintenance management, or logistics are highly aligned
    • Familiarity with OSHA, DOT, and EPA compliance standards
    • Proficiency with maintenance tracking systems and Microsoft Office or equivalent
    Benefits

    • Estimated compensation range: $95,000 โ€“ $115,000 annually (based on experience).
    • Comprehensive benefits typically include medical, dental, vision, 401(k), PTO, and professional development pathways.
