What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Director of Partner Engineering, and why are they important?

To excel as a Director of Partner Engineering, you need deep technical expertise in software development, systems integration, and a proven history of leading engineering teams, often supported by a degree in computer science or engineering. Mastery of APIs, cloud platforms, and partner management tools, as well as familiarity with project management systems like Jira, is typically expected. Exceptional communication, negotiation, and relationship-building skills help you align cross-functional teams and foster strategic partnerships. These capabilities are crucial for successfully driving technical collaboration, ensuring partner satisfaction, and delivering scalable joint solutions.

What does a Director of Partner Engineering do?

A Director of Partner Engineering leads teams that work closely with strategic partners to integrate and optimize technical solutions. They act as a bridge between the company’s engineering teams and external partners, ensuring successful product integrations, co-development projects, and technical collaboration. Their responsibilities often include setting technical strategy, managing partner relationships, overseeing solution architecture, and resolving complex technical challenges. This role requires strong leadership, communication, and technical skills, along with deep industry knowledge.

Job description

Job Description SummaryGE HealthCare's Patient Care Solutions business is building a unified Internet of Medical Things (IoMT) Platform that spans device, edge, and cloud to enable hospitals and caregivers to deliver the best care across the critical care continuum. The IoMT Platform provides secure, scalable connectivity, data and computing solutions that manage mission-critical workflows across PCS - from bedside monitors to cloud - into one harmonious solution for customers and developers.
Role Summary
The Director, IoMT Core is a technically grounded leadership role responsible for the platform services that form the backbone of PCS device-to-edge-to-cloud connectivity. This includes the Axone SDK as well as the core runtime services that every PCS product depends on for mission critical communication, command and control across medical devices within the IoMT ecosystem.
The team owns both the SDK that product teams integrate to connect their patient monitoring solutions to the IoMT ecosystem, and the core runtime microservices - message routing and durability, configuration management, serviceability, observability, and lifecycle management - that run on edge and cloud compute. The SDK must be well-designed, well-documented, and reliable as a platform component consumed by multiple PCS products. The core runtime services are a foundational part of mission-critical patient monitoring IoMT infrastructure.
The ideal candidate has a strong software engineering background and is ready to grow into a software director-level role where they can shape both the technology and team based in Waukesha, WI. This is a unique opportunity to lead a critical capability area within a newly formed IoMT Platform organization, with significant influence over technical direction while building a high-performing team in the greater Milwaukee area.Job DescriptionKey ResponsibilitiesTechnical Leadership

Partner with the principals and architects within the organization who drive technical direction and architecture decisions, ensuring the technical roadmap stays aligned with business objectives, program commitments, and the broader IoMT Platform architecture.

Ensure the team's technical investments are prioritized in a way that balances program delivery needs with platform modernization and long-term architectural goals.

Drive contract-first API design with explicit versioning and lifecycle governance, ensuring SDK components and platform services provide consistent, well-documented integration points for consuming product teams.

Manage relationships with key software suppliers and technology partners, ensuring vendor-provided components meet platform quality, performance, and roadmap alignment requirements.

Be technically engaged to understand the tradeoffs the architects are making and to represent those tradeoffs credibly to business and program stakeholders.

Service Delivery

Ensure the team delivers reliable, well-tested platform services on the cadence established by the IoMT release train, meeting commitments made through the portfolio governance process.

Manage the balance between new feature development, platform modernization, technical debt reduction, and defect resolution across the core services portfolio.

Drive platform lifecycle management capabilities that enable seamless deployment, configuration, and updates of core services across edge and cloud environments.

Ensure core services maintain backward compatibility and clear deprecation paths, minimizing disruption to consuming product teams.

Participate in portfolio-level prioritization with IoMT Product, Program and Operations teams, representing Core services capacity and tradeoffs transparently.

Team Building & Coaching

Be a coach and role model - set the standard for technical excellence, collaboration, and continuous learning that you expect from the team.

Foster a culture of engineering ownership where team members take pride in the quality, reliability, and usability of the services they build.

Establish and maintain engineering practices (code review, design review, testing standards, documentation) that ensure high-quality, maintainable platform services.

Attract and retain strong engineering talent by creating an environment where people do meaningful work, grow their skills, and see the impact of their contributions on patient care.

Developer Experience & Enablement

Ensure the SDK and APIs provided by Core services offer a clear, productive developer experience for internal product teams building on the IoMT Platform.

Own the quality of SDK documentation, integration guides, and reference examples that enable product teams to integrate with core platform services efficiently.

Champion modern CI/CD practices within the Core services team, reducing manual steps and accelerating the build-test-deploy cycle for both edge and cloud targets.

Drive adoption of AI-assisted development workflows across the team to accelerate delivery, improve code quality, and reduce manual effort in design, implementation, testing, and documentation.

Operational Excellence & Reliability

Ensure core platform services meet the reliability and performance expectations of life-critical healthcare workflows.

Drive observability as a first-class capability - ensure core services produce the telemetry, tracing, and diagnostic data needed for rapid issue resolution across device, edge, and cloud boundaries.

Partner with the IoMT Operations team on platform verification, ensuring core services are thoroughly tested at the integration level before release.

Support L4 engineering escalations related to core services, ensuring the team provides timely, effective resolution and feeds learnings back into platform improvements.

Collaborate with external partners to manage dependencies and ensure partner-provided capabilities meet platform requirements.

Required Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or related technical field; advanced degree preferred.

8+ years of experience in software engineering with at least 3 years in a people management role (software manager or equivalent).

Demonstrated ability to coach and develop engineers with a leadership style grounded in technical credibility and mentorship.

Experience managing mixed teams of full-time employees and contractors.

Experience managing delivery across multiple concurrent programs with competing priorities.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience with both on-premise/edge and cloud deployment models, including containerized workloads and CI/CD pipelines.

Experience designing and delivering SDK, API, or platform service products consumed by other engineering teams.

Experience in healthcare technology, medical devices, or IoMT/IoT platforms.

Familiarity with regulated product development environments (QMS, NPI tollgates, design history files) - medical device or life-critical systems experience strongly preferred.

Familiarity with message-oriented middleware, pub/sub systems, or real-time data distribution.

Experience with Kubernetes-based edge compute platforms and container orchestration in hybrid (edge + cloud) environments.

Experience with contract-first API design, semantic versioning, and platform lifecycle governance.

Experience managing relationships with third-party software vendors and technology partners, including contract negotiation, technical evaluation, and roadmap alignment.
