Job description

A top client is searching for an experienced Director of Residential Operations located in Chicago, IL. As the Director of Residential Operations, you are responsible for leading and optimizing all operational functions across the organization to ensure safe, efficient, scalable, and profitable execution of projects and services. You will provide strategic and day-to-day leadership over Operations Managers, purchasing, inventory management, warehouse operations, fleet/material coordination, and operational support staff.

The Director of Residential Operations partners closely with executive leadership, sales, customer service, and field operations teams to drive operational excellence, improve customer experience, enhance profitability, and support company growth initiatives. This position is responsible for building scalable systems, establishing accountability, improving operational KPIs, and creating alignment between sales, scheduling, procurement, field execution, and customer communication.

As the Director of Operations, you will have responsibility for:

Operational Leadership & Execution

· Lead and oversee all day-to-day operational functions across residential division, including Operations Managers, scheduling teams, warehouse operations, purchasing, inventory, and administrative support staff

· Ensure operational consistency, efficiency, and accountability across all locations, teams, and projects

· Develop and maintain scalable operational processes that support company growth while improving execution quality and profitability

· Monitor operational performance and implement corrective actions to address inefficiencies, delays, or resource challenges

Team Leadership & Development

· Provide leadership, coaching, performance management, and professional development for operational leadership teams and support staff

· Build and maintain a culture of accountability, urgency, collaboration, and continuous improvement

· Support recruiting, onboarding, retention, and succession planning for operations personnel and subcontractor relationships

· Establish clear performance expectations, KPIs, and accountability systems across operational teams

Scheduling, Field Coordination & Project Support

· Oversee scheduling processes, labor planning, subcontractor coordination, and material logistics to ensure efficient project execution

· Ensure strong communication and coordination between operations, field crews, sales, customer service, and customers throughout the project lifecycle

· Support operational teams in resolving scheduling conflicts, resource constraints, and escalated project issues

· Improve workflow efficiency and operational coordination between departments to reduce delays and improve customer experience

Purchasing, Inventory & Warehouse Management

· Oversee purchasing, inventory control, warehouse operations, fleet/material coordination, and vendor relationships

· Develop inventory forecasting and material planning strategies to maintain operational continuity while minimizing waste and excess inventory

· Ensure accurate inventory management, material tracking, warehouse organization, and delivery coordination

Financial Performance & Operational Analytics

· Monitor operational KPIs and performance metrics related to productivity, scheduling efficiency, margin performance, backlog, inventory accuracy, and customer satisfaction

· Partner with leadership on budgeting, forecasting, staffing plans, and operational growth initiatives

· Analyze operational and financial data to identify trends, risks, and improvement opportunities.

· Drive operational discipline and decision-making.

Process Improvement & Systems Management

· Lead continuous improvement initiatives focused on workflow optimization, operational standardization, and scalable systems development.

· Assist in developing and implementing operational systems, reporting tools, CRM/ERP platforms, and process improvements that enhance visibility and decision-making.

· Identify opportunities to improve communication, automation, reporting accuracy, and operational efficiency

Customer Experience & Cross-Functional Collaboration

· Partner closely with sales, customer service, finance, and executive leadership teams to improve operational alignment and customer outcomes

· Support teams in resolving escalated customer concerns while maintaining professionalism and a customer-first mindset

· Perform other related duties as assigned

To be successful in the role you must possess:

· Bachelor’s degree in Business, Operations Management, Construction Management, Supply Chain, or a related field preferred; equivalent industry leadership experience will be considered.

· 7–10+ years of progressive operational leadership experience within construction, home services, specialty trades, logistics, or related operational industries.

· Proven experience managing multi-functional operational teams.

· Experience overseeing project-based operations involving subcontractor coordination, field scheduling, labor planning, and material logistics.

· Strong background in operational process improvement, workflow optimization, KPI reporting, and scalable systems development.

· Demonstrated experience managing operational budgets, forecasting, purchasing strategies, inventory controls, and productivity initiatives.

· Experience working within high-volume or multi-location operational environments preferred.

· Proficiency with CRM, ERP, inventory management, scheduling, and reporting systems.

· Experience building and developing accountable, high-performing teams with a strong operational and customer service culture.

· Strong financial and operational acumen, including forecasting, labor planning, inventory management, purchasing oversight, and margin awareness.

· Ability to collaborate cross-functionally with sales, customer service, finance, warehouse, and field operations teams to improve overall business performance.

· Strong understanding of scheduling, subcontractor management, material coordination, inventory control, and operational workflows.

· Customer-focused approach with the ability to resolve escalated issues professionally while maintaining operational accountability.

· Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, growth-oriented environment while maintaining structure, discipline, and operational consistency.
