Job description

We are seeking a highly skilled and strategic Director of HL7 Integrations to lead our healthcare data integration initiatives. This role is responsible for overseeing the design, development, deployment, and maintenance of HL7 interfaces that enable seamless data exchange between healthcare systems, EHRs, and third-party platforms. The ideal candidate brings deep expertise in HL7 standards (v2.x, v3, CDA, FHIR), strong leadership capabilities, and a proven track record in managing enterprise-scale integration teams and projects.
Strategic Leadership:
Define and execute the roadmap for HL7 and healthcare data integrations aligned with organizational goals.
Serve as a subject matter expert on HL7, FHIR, and interoperability standards.
Advocate for data interoperability and best practices across teams and with partners.
Technical Oversight:
Guide the design, development, testing, and deployment of HL7 interfaces and integration engines (e.g., Mirth, Biztalk ).
Ensure reliability, scalability, and security of integration solutions.
Collaborate with internal teams (Product, Engineering, Security, Compliance) to deliver robust solutions.
Business Partnering:
Collaboration with business stakeholders to understand their needs and challenges.
Identification of opportunities where technology solutions can improve business processes and outcomes.
Acting as a liaison between the IT department and specific business units, ensuring business needs are met.
Solution Development & Implementation:
Design and development of IT solutions that align with business requirements.
Working with cross functional IT teams and external vendors to implement solutions.
Ensuring solutions meet quality, compliance, and security standards.
Developing and maintaining documentation for IT solutions, as well as providing training and proper communication to business users on system changes.
Project Management:
Potential management of IT projects related to solution implementation, upgrades, or enhancements.
Development of project plans, timelines, and budgets.
Coordination of resources and ensuring projects are delivered on time and within budget.
Support & Maintenance:
Providing ongoing support for implemented solutions.
Troubleshooting and resolving issues.
Collaboration with IT support teams and vendors to address technical problems.
Security & Compliance:
Providing solutions complying with relevant security standards and compliance requirements
Implementing and managing security measures to protect the organization's IT systems and data
Performing regular risk assessments and implementing disaster recovery plans
participating in any risk management efforts.
Continuous Improvement:
Identification of opportunities to optimize existing solutions and processes.
Staying up-to-date with emerging technologies and industry best practices.
Team Leadership and Development
Tracking and managing the performance of team members, providing feedback, and addressing any performance issues.
Assigning tasks, setting priorities and overseeing daily operations of the team.
Recruit, hire and develop team
Budgeting and Resource Management
Managing budget and allocating resources for various projects and operational needs.
Evaluating costs and seeking opportunities to optimize spending (ongoing task!).
Renegotiating vendor contracts, identifying areas for cost savings and ensuring that IT expenses align with the budget.
Vendor and Stakeholder Management
Maintaining relationships with technology vendors and service providers (includes negotiating contracts, reviewing performance, making recommendations for vendor selection or changes etc.).
Other Responsibilities
Other duties as assigned at the discretion of Management
Skills and Qualifications:
Required:
Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Health Informatics, Engineering, or related field (Master's preferred).
10+ years of experience in healthcare IT, with a strong focus on HL7 integrations.
5+ years of experience in a leadership or director-level role.
Deep understanding of HL7 v2.x, CDA, FHIR, X12, and related healthcare data standards.
Hands-on experience with integration engines like Mirth Connect, Rhapsody, Cloverleaf, or Corepoint.
Familiarity with EHRs such as Epic, Cerner, MatrixCare, Point Click Care etc.
Strong knowledge of HIPAA compliance and healthcare data security practices.
Communication Skills: Excellent written and verbal communication skills to effectively interact with business partners and IT teams.
