Job Description

The Assistant Director of Infrastructure and Network Management serves a critical leadership role in ensuring the security, reliability, and strategic advancement of the school division's network infrastructure. Reporting to the Director of Infrastructure and Support, this position is responsible for assisting with the design, implementation, cybersecurity oversight, and ongoing management of complex enterprise network systems that support instructional, operational, and administrative functions across the division.

This role will also provide leadership and operational support of the division's use and management of the new municipal fiber network within the City of Alexandria, ensuring secure, resilient, and high-performing connectivity between schools and division facilities. The position requires deep technical expertise in network infrastructure and cybersecurity, as well as the ability to lead cross-functional initiatives, manage critical infrastructure projects, and guide network staff in achieving strategic technology and security objectives.

This position operates reports to Central Office, and will regularly be in schools in ACPS. This position may require occasional work outside of regular business hours to respond to critical infrastructure or cybersecurity incidents, support network operations, or participate in planned maintenance activities. Travel may be required to attend meetings or training sessions.

Qualifications

Education

A minimum of a Bachelor's degree or commensurate industry experience with focus in information technology strongly preferred. Industry certifications are preferred.

Experience

  • This position requires a minimum of 5- 7 years of experience in the field of network design and management, Management of technical staff, and cybersecurity.
  • Minimum of 5-7 years of experience in network design, administration and management, with a proven track record of progressively increasing responsibility.

Key Competencies

  • In-depth knowledge of networking technologies and protocols, including but not limited to Multi-gigabit Ethernet, Routing, TCP/IP, DNS management, DHCP management, VLANs, VPNs, Server Virtualization, SAN, WAN topologies and technologies, WiFi standards and management.
  • Strong communication and management skills, with the ability to effectively manage and motivate a team of technical professionals.

Essential Functions

  • Lead and support cybersecurity initiatives for the division's network infrastructure, including implementing security best practices, monitoring network vulnerabilities, coordinating incident response efforts, and ensuring compliance with applicable cybersecurity standards and policies.
  • Manage and support the division's connectivity and operations related to the City of Alexandria's municipal fiber network, ensuring reliable, secure, and scalable network services across schools and administrative facilities.
  • Collaborate with City of Alexandria technology, infrastructure, and public works teams to coordinate municipal network projects, troubleshoot connectivity issues, support cross-agency initiatives, and align network infrastructure planning with division and city strategic goals.
  • Network Infrastructure Management: Oversee the day-to-day aspects of deployment, and maintenance of the organization's network infrastructure, including LAN, WAN, VPN, and cloud-based networks.
  • Security Management: Manage network security protocols, including firewall rules and updates, intrusion detection system, the division's SIEM Alert system.
  • Team Leadership: Lead and mentor a team of network technicians, providing guidance, support, and technical expertise to ensure the smooth operation of the network infrastructure.
  • Strategic Planning: Collaborate with the Director of infrastructure and Support to develop long-term network strategies aligned with organizational goals and objectives. Provide input and recommendations on technology investments and resource allocation.
  • Disaster Recovery and Business Continuity: Assist in the maintenance of disaster recovery and business continuity plans for the network infrastructure, ensuring that critical systems and data are protected and can be restored in the event of a disruption.
