Position Summary

The Director of Financial Operations is a senior leadership role at the intersection of financial stewardship and organizational strategy. Reporting to the COO, the Director leads a team of finance professionals and manages key external partners, including a CPA firm. This position is responsible for ensuring the accuracy, compliance, and effectiveness of all financial operations while also serving as a strategic advisor to the COO and executive team.

Beyond overseeing core accounting and financial systems, the Director plays a central role in shaping the organizationโ€™s resource planning, executive reporting, and long-term strategy. They partner with the COO to drive cross-departmental initiatives and lead special projects that improve organizational performance. With a blend of technical expertise and strategic vision, the Director ensures that the organizationโ€™s financial health, fiscal capacity, and programming are aligned in support of its mission and future growth.

Key ResponsibilitiesFinance & Accountingย 
  • Manage day-to-day accounting and financial operations, ensuring timely and accurate reporting.
  • Lead budgeting, forecasting, and long-term financial planning processes across the organization.
  • Oversee month-end and year-end close, ensuring GAAP compliance and financial transparency.
  • Monitor cash flow, implement efficiency improvements, and optimize resource utilization.
  • Establish and maintain internal controls, financial policies, and compliance standards.
  • Partner with Development on grant management, reporting, and compliance.
Strategic Planning & Analysis
  • Partner with the COO to lead annual and multi-year organizational planning, including resource planning, staffing models, and financial sustainability.
  • Provide executive-level analysis and reporting to inform senior leadership decision-making and board engagement.
    Translate complex financial and operational data into actionable insights for executives and stakeholders.
  • Identify and drive organization-wide initiatives that improve alignment, efficiency, and impact.
Organizational Initiatives & Innovation
  • Support the COO in advancing organizational-wide priorities
  • Lead special projects and cross-departmental initiatives that strengthen organizational effectiveness.
  • Pinpoint opportunities for improvement across finance and operations and lead implementation of solutions.
  • Develop frameworks and tools that improve organization-wide visibility into financial and operational health.
  • Actively contribute to initiatives that strengthen organizational effectiveness and preparedness.
About You
  • Possess a minimum of 7ย  years of progressive experience in finance and accounting, including at least 3 years within a non-profit organization.
  • Demonstrate a commitment to building a just and inclusive economy that provides opportunity and dignity to all Americans and a passion for preserving and strengthening democracy.
  • Possess a working knowledge of financial practices and procedures applicable to both c3 and c4 organizations.
  • Proficient in financial software and systems, with a track record of implementing and improving financial processes and controls.
  • Experienced in working with people from diverse racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic backgrounds, and able to incorporate the perspectives of multiple communities, particularly those from marginalized communities, into decision-making processes.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills, with an ability to articulate financial concepts to stakeholders across the organization.
  • Strong managerial skills, with a proven ability to evaluate the work of others and foster a collaborative work environment.
  • Highly organized, flexible, and able to manage competing priorities across multiple work streams effectively.
  • Skilled problem solver and project manager, with a track record of driving projects to successful completion.
  • Proven ability to manage up and build deep interpersonal relationships with colleagues and stakeholders.
  • Comfortable working collaboratively with a team while also being able to work independently to achieve goals.
  • Able to maintain confidentiality and discretion in handling sensitive information and relationships.

Benefits

Comprehensive benefits package that includes 100% employer-paid health, dental, and vision insurance for employees (and their families). Employees are able to enroll in a 401k retirement plan and are eligible for a 3% automatic contribution and up to a 3% employer match on 401k contributions. Employees are also eligible for pre-tax transportation benefits. Employees will receive 120 hours of vacation time, 80 hours of health leave, up to 2 days of casual leave, and 20 hours of volunteer leave annually. Employees will also receive 13 paid holidays throughout the calendar year. Employees are eligible for 16 weeks of paid family and medical leave after 90 days of employment.
