Director of Finance and Accounting

Position Overview

The Director of Finance and Accounting is a senior leadership role responsible for overseeing our dedicated accounting services business line. This leader will supervise and develop a team that includes a Senior and Staff Accountants, ensuring the delivery of timely, accurate, and client-centered financial reporting.

The Director will be responsible for scaling the business line, establishing and reinforcing controls, improving efficiencies, and mentoring a team aligned to excellence and accountability.

Key Responsibilities

Leadership & Strategic Oversight

  • Lead the Financial Accounting team responsible for delivering monthly, quarterly, and annual financial packages for commercial and association clients.
  • Manage team capacity, performance, and alignment to client expectations and service delivery timelines.
  • Establish and monitor team-wide KPIs such as client defined projects, on-time financial reporting, AR aging thresholds, and internal checklist compliance.
  • Champion operational improvements and guide process innovation to increase accuracy, efficiency, and scalability of the business line.

Team Supervision & Development

  • Supervise and develop the Staff Accountants.
  • Ensure team adherence to clear production schedules and financial deliverable timelines (typically 10th–20th of each month).
  • Foster a learning culture through ongoing training, mentorship, and a strong feedback loop for both technical and client service performance.
  • Monitor workload distribution and quality across the team to ensure timely completion of bank reconciliations, TICAMs, and AR reporting.

Client & Stakeholder Engagement

  • Serve as the primary point of escalation for complex accounting issues or sensitive client requests.
  • Oversee and support client communications protocols, ensuring property managers are looped into key financial updates and reporting cycles.
  • Collaborate with the VP of Finance and Accounting and senior leadership to align financial services operations with broader organizational goals.

Process Controls & Technology

  • Ensure team members adhere to documented SOPs and contribute to their improvement.
  • Oversee risk management practices, flag noncompliance issues, and champion the continuous improvement of internal controls.
  • Partner with team members to optimize use of Yardi and other platforms, ensuring data accuracy, reporting consistency, and user confidence.

  • Accounts Receivable Management: Ensure prompt collection practices, timely late fee application, and accurate aging reports.
  • Financial Accuracy & Reporting: Lead a culture of high-quality reporting, with zero tolerance for missed deadlines or unreconciled discrepancies.
  • Communication Cadence: Maintain consistent and professional communication with clients and internal stakeholders.
  • Compliance & Internal Controls: Reinforce strong safeguards around data integrity, fraud prevention, and SOP execution.
  • Technology Proficiency & Training: Promote software fluency and encourage proactive learning and sharing of knowledge across the team.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field required; CPA or relevant certification a plus.
  • 7+ years of progressive experience in accounting, including supervisory experience; property accounting preferred.
  • Deep knowledge of accounting principles, financial reporting, AR/AP practices, and budgeting.
  • Advanced proficiency in Yardi and Microsoft Excel.
  • Demonstrated experience leading high-performing teams and building operational systems from the ground up.
  • Strong organizational, analytical, and communication skills.
  • Ability to manage priorities, solve problems, and maintain professionalism in a fast-paced environment.
