Director, Laboratory Operations

Location: DeLand, Florida

Schedule: Monday – Friday

Compensation: $140,000 – $170,000 + Comprehensive Benefits

An established and rapidly growing healthcare organization is seeking an experienced Director of Laboratory Operations to lead a high-complexity, high-volume clinical laboratory operation in DeLand, Florida. This individual will oversee day-to-day laboratory operations, drive operational excellence, ensure regulatory compliance, and lead strategic growth initiatives across the laboratory environment.

This is a senior leadership opportunity for a proven laboratory operations professional with strong microbiology expertise, multi-site operational leadership experience, and a track record of developing high-performing teams.

Position Overview

The Director of Laboratory Operations is responsible for the technical, scientific, operational, and administrative oversight of the clinical laboratory. This role partners closely with executive leadership and the Medical Director to ensure laboratory services are delivered efficiently, compliantly, and with the highest standards of quality and patient care.

Key Responsibilities

Operational Leadership

  • Lead daily operations of a high-volume clinical laboratory environment
  • Manage operational budgets, productivity metrics, and cost-saving initiatives
  • Utilize operational data and analytics to drive business decisions and resource allocation
  • Standardize policies, procedures, and workflows across laboratory operations
  • Ensure all laboratory operations remain compliant with CAP, federal, state, and local regulatory requirements
  • Support long-term strategic planning, service line expansion, and operational growth initiatives
  • Oversee technical and platform transitions across laboratory environments

Team Leadership & Development

  • Lead, mentor, and develop laboratory leadership teams and emerging talent
  • Establish performance standards and drive accountability through collaboration and influence
  • Foster strong team engagement, communication, and a culture of belonging
  • Build organizational bench strength and support succession planning initiatives
  • Drive continuous improvement in operational execution and service delivery

Quality & Compliance

  • Ensure laboratory quality assurance and quality control programs are properly maintained
  • Oversee laboratory training, competency assessment, and performance management
  • Ensure accurate testing, documentation, and reporting practices
  • Maintain readiness for CAP inspections and regulatory audits

Customer & Stakeholder Management

  • Build strong relationships with internal and external stakeholders
  • Resolve operational issues and customer concerns in a timely and professional manner
  • Partner cross-functionally with clinical, operational, and executive teams

Qualifications

Required

  • Bachelor’s degree in Medical Technology, Clinical Laboratory Science, or related scientific field
  • Medical Technologist registry required (ASCP, AMT, AAB, or equivalent)
  • Minimum 10 years of recent laboratory leadership experience, including significant microbiology experience
  • Demonstrated success leading large teams in high-volume laboratory environments
  • Strong experience overseeing laboratory operations within CAP, federal, and state regulatory standards
  • Proven leadership experience managing operational change and technical/platform transitions
  • Strong communication, team-building, and leadership development skills
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Outlook)

Preferred

  • Florida Supervisor License in Microbiology or Generalist designation
  • Candidates relocating to Florida must be eligible and willing to obtain licensure
  • Master’s degree in Business Administration or related scientific discipline
  • Multi-site laboratory leadership experience
