Director Implementation Science information

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Director of Implementation Science, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Director of Implementation Science, you need advanced expertise in implementation research, program evaluation, and evidence-based practice, typically supported by a doctoral degree in a related field. Familiarity with data analysis software, project management tools, and frameworks like CFIR or RE-AIM is essential. Strong leadership, strategic thinking, and stakeholder engagement skills distinguish top performers in this role. These competencies ensure effective translation of research into practice, successful program adoption, and measurable impact on health outcomes.

What are some common challenges faced by a Director of Implementation Science when integrating research findings into healthcare practice?

A Director of Implementation Science often encounters challenges such as bridging the gap between evidence-based research and real-world clinical workflows, managing stakeholder expectations, and ensuring consistent adoption across diverse teams. Successfully integrating new practices requires strong collaboration with clinicians, administrators, and data analysts, as well as the ability to navigate organizational resistance to change. Additionally, measuring and demonstrating the impact of implementation efforts can be complex, but it is crucial for driving ongoing support and funding.

What is a Director of Implementation Science?

A Director of Implementation Science is a senior leader responsible for overseeing the application of evidence-based practices and research findings into real-world settings, particularly within healthcare, public health, or social services organizations. They design, manage, and evaluate programs to ensure research innovations are effectively and sustainably integrated into practice. This role involves coordinating multidisciplinary teams, securing funding, and measuring the impact of interventions to improve outcomes. Directors of Implementation Science also contribute to the strategic direction of their organizations by promoting best practices and continuous improvement.

What is the difference between Director Implementation Science vs Implementation Scientist?

AspectDirector Implementation ScienceImplementation Scientist

Job description

Key Responsibilities

People Management & Team Development

  • Directly manage a team of Network Implementation Engineers across project delivery lifecycle; set clear performance expectations, conduct structured 1:1s, and own individual development plans.
  • Build a culture of execution discipline — ticket hygiene, change management compliance, documentation quality, and rigorous project close-out.
  • Identify skill gaps and build structured training and certification pathways aligned to ECI’s service portfolio.
  • Manage performance formally and informally; address issues directly, constructively, and on record when required.
  • Participate in hiring decisions for the implementation function, including technical assessments and structured panel interviews.

Project Delivery & Program Management

  • Own end-to-end delivery of network implementation projects spanning new client onboarding, infrastructure refreshes, office builds, and technology migrations.
  • Define and enforce project intake, scoping, scheduling, and resource allocation standards across the team.
  • Maintain active visibility across all open workstreams; surface and resolve blockers before they become client escalations.
  • Drive post-implementation reviews and root cause analysis; translate findings into repeatable process improvements for the team.
  • Coordinate with Client Services, Solutions Architecture, and pre-sales to align implementation timelines with client commitments and ECI delivery standards.

Technical Standards & Oversight

  • Serve as the technical authority for ECI’s implementation standards covering Cisco (Catalyst, Nexus, IOS-XE/XR), Palo Alto firewalls, Meraki, and SD-WAN platforms.
  • Review and approve low-level designs (LLDs) and implementation runbooks before execution.
  • Establish and enforce configuration standards that ensure consistency, repeatability, and alignment with client security and compliance requirements (SOC 2, PCI-DSS, NIST, HIPAA).
  • Serve as escalation point for complex in-flight technical issues; engage hands-on when warranted while ensuring the team learns from every resolution.
  • Champion Zero Trust and SASE architecture principles within ECI’s implementation workflows.

Client & Stakeholder Communication

  • Own implementation status communication to client stakeholders; translate technical risk into clear business impact language.
  • Represent the implementation team in internal delivery reviews, capacity planning, and service improvement forums.
  • Maintain ECI’s documentation standard across implementation plans, network diagrams, as-built records, and configuration baselines — ensuring clean handoffs to managed services teams.

Qualifications

Required

  • 10+ years of progressive network engineering experience with a demonstrable track record in enterprise implementation, ideally within an MSP or multi-client environment.
  • 3+ years of direct people management — you have hired engineers, set goals, handled performance, and actively developed talent.
  • Deep technical proficiency in Cisco networking (Catalyst, Nexus, IOS-XE/XR), Palo Alto firewalls (App-ID, Threat Prevention, VPN, Panorama), and wireless (WLC, Meraki MR/MS/MX).
  • Strong working knowledge of routing protocols (BGP, OSPF, EIGRP), VLANs, QoS, and IPv4/IPv6 fundamentals.
  • Proven ability to run multiple concurrent implementation projects with accountability for schedules, resources, and stakeholder communication.
  • Solid understanding of security frameworks, compliance standards, and change management governance in regulated client environments.

Preferred

  • Active CCNP, CCIE, or PCNSE certification; equivalent demonstrated expertise considered.
  • Experience with SD-WAN (Cisco Viptela, VeloCloud) and SASE / Zero Trust architecture in client deployments.
  • Familiarity with automation tooling (Python, Ansible) to drive repeatability and reduce manual effort across the team.
  • Experience with network monitoring platforms (SolarWinds, PRTG, Meraki Insights) and using telemetry data to drive delivery quality.
  • Hedge fund, financial services, or similarly regulated client-facing environment experience is a strong plus.

Education

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or related field — or equivalent professional experience.

Who We Are Looking For

Beyond credentials, we are hiring for a specific leadership profile. The right candidate:

  • Communicates expectations without ambiguity and follows through consistently. Leads with clarity.
  • Engineers respect them because they know the stack — not just the title. Commands technical credibility.
  • Holds the team and themselves to high execution standards without micromanaging. Drives accountability.
  • Focused on delivery quality and reliability, not just activity volume. Solves for client outcomes.
  • Understands the job is to build the best team — not to be the best individual engineer on it. Scales through people.

ECI’s culture is all about connection - connection with our clients, our technology and most importantly with each other.  In addition to working with an amazing team around the world, ECI also offers a competitive compensation package and the range for this role is a maximum of $142,000 annually with flexible PTO, health benefit eligibility the first of the month, life insurance, pet insurance, 401K and so much more!  If you believe you’d be a great fit and are ready for your best job ever, we’d like to hear from you!!
